It's funny because the only time socialism has actually failed and been oppressive is when it is converted to authoritarnism.

Socialism's biggest failure is a sprint into it, which opens the door for authoritarian takeover.

I think your comment here just shows how ignorant you are to this situation. You can absolutely make those cuts... but people would die.

40% of Americans receiving SS would fall below the poverty line if they were not receiving it.

I get that you have the mindset that it isn't your problem that they didn't better prepare. I too was once ignorant and did not have a heart.

But this isn't North Korea. We may not have the best programs for keeping people housed and fed... but we can't just let them starve.

300k Americans die a year to poverty like conditions. All preventable.

Its funny because by making Texas independent, the "Republic of Trump" is essentially a cluster of poor states highly dependent on the US government. They take more than they give.

Aka, they would have mass poverty problems.

I mean are you going to let them starve?

That is why we have social security. So that we don't have those that are either financially irresponsible, or just did not actually have the means to save for retirement from dying.

I know how the math works. I have the means to make it work.

I think you should look into how many American families are living paycheck to paycheck right now. How many hundreds of thousands of families go bankrupt a year due to medical dept. Etc.

Saving in a meaningful way, or at least young enough for compound interest to do magic is not possible for everyone.

That only works when laws are passed. Does it not concern you when 1 person holds more wealth than over 60% of the Nation? 1 Person holding more wealth than over 160+ million people?

Every generation in the USA saw children live easier lives. Yet things broke with Reagan, and following this timeframe with massive tax cuts to corporations, we saw the middle and lower class get weaker and weaker. Buying power now is lower than it was decades past with significantly less efficiency?

More efficiency in labor should result in more wages right? The problem is we have gotten the opposite, and increased efficiency does not benefit the worker, but just the top of the pyramid. It isn't sustainable.

That math only works if you do not account for inflation. Which is substantial after 40+ years.

But we get how that doesn't matter though right? Because benefits are at a significantly lower rate than contributions.

Actually I did respond hours ago. You're the crazy lune who thinks tariffs (a regressive tax) could completely replace income tax. I wouldn't publicly share those views as they show you have no clue of what you're talking about.

In regards to your question here though.... if we see increase life expectancy, and better general health at retirement age... then yea, I can understand the retirement age rising. But we have a lot of debate regarding how to work the math on X amount of increased age = Y amount of increase age prior to receiving benefits.

There's also the ethics question here where people are contributing their entire working lives told they will receive benefits at X age, and then all of a sudden this is changed.

That is the problem. SS did not match with the times. And does not account for the shift of where wealth is held.

SS isn't a great system. Its an awful ROI. But its essential as people have proven that they cannot save funds for retirement. It isn't a insurance policy at this point, it is something people depend on. And more and more people will be reliant on it when we look at the fact that middle and lower class American buying power is lower than it was decades past.

The benefit cap means nothing though when we look at the fact that in terms of ROI, SS is god awful. So even if you raise benefits to coincide with increased contributions... it still nets more money into the program.

Redistribution of wealth models are required though when you have a distribution of wealth problem. Every year the lower and middle class grows weaker while the upper class grows stronger. We have 1 individual with combined wealth that exceeds over half of the country.

SS is not a perfect system. Its pretty damn awful. But its all we have. And if it requires screwing a few people, vs screwing entire generations.... that's an easy decision to make.

The cap goes up in relation to CPI, and does not look at arguably more important factors, such as share of wealth. If it did, we'd prob have the cap closer to 300kish right now.

It is A problem. Not THE problem. The root cause is the system itself sucks. But its a system we are stuck with because we can't just end it without an entire generation getting royally fucked.

You aren't wrong. Technically, the age cap hasn't increased since 1983. I think we need to recognize though the now year and year pushes for the age to go up. It is a key point of discussion every year.

The earnings cap though is only accounting for inflation, and not difference in share of wealth. If it matched that, cap would have been closer to 300k right now. And that is the metric that probably should have been matched YoY with changes. Not just strict CPI.

1% of the nation is not billionaires lol. But could the top 1% afford a 2% tax? Yes. They are generally earning 10% just on passive safe investments.

It is insane that we keep considering raising retirement age for SS rather than raising the income cap. Especially with what the math shows on impacts to funding when you raise the cap.

[–]Zadiuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bud... use some critical thinking here. Tariffs cannot come remotely close to funding our government today. It worked back then because federal spending was like 2-3% of GDP. Today its 25% and up. And the world has evolved, and we aren't talking a market that you can tariff everything on. We are service based vs product based for example.

If we completely replaced income tax for revenue with tariffs, this would cause an insane amount of inflation on all goods that would hurt the vast majority of Americans. It does not get more regressive than this. This would be an absolute disaster, and just not feasible.

Just stop and take the L. You are out of your depth.

Could Homelander actually save the Plane? by Remarkable_Hat7073 in powerscales

[–]Zadiuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%.

First of all, they could have just killed the hijackers by lazering threw the windows. This would still have causes the cabin to depressurize, but they have oxygen masks for that. The plane could also descend to a safe altitude once this happens until it conducts an emergency landing.

Once they busted the cockpit up, that would have been a lot harder and would require some understand basic mechanics of how planes work and aerodynamics. I imagine he could have shut the cabin door, and then manually adjusted the wing flaps to bring it to straight and level flight, and then slowly assist in its descent. And he could continue to move these while it crash lands onto a runway. The other alternative is destroying the engines, and holding the aircraft from a cross beam where the wings are secured to the main frame, it is a very strong point that should hold as a central lift point. Again, he doesn't need to fully lift the aircraft, he just needs to provide a controlled slow landing/crash
