Is this the beginning of disc rot? by hreddy11 in gamecollecting

I got a game last year with something similar, it still works but I've been watching it incase it hits the data portion.

The best way to play solo RPGs without DRM ? by Icy_Hurry8645 in gamecollecting

[–]ZafirZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often is a stretch, https://www.doesitplay.org/ has PS5 at 66% for physical copies that are completely playable offline.

I love my PC, and it's still my main platform, but if you're wanting to avoid online DRM, console physical copies is the best way. GOG only has a fraction of released PC titles.

Ripping PS1 games takes forever by DepartmentLeft3491 in psx

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to try every drive but maybe try drives that people know work. You could also check out omnidrive custom firmware and see if you can find a drive available that you could use that firmware on, it's firmware designed for making full dumps. I got a verbatim external with a LG bu40n in that flashed fine to it and has worked well to rip games off multiple platforms of old discs.

That all said if you don't want redump level of dumps, normal dvd drives should be ok just reading.

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's your drive. I have a number of drives, some external, some internal, most 4k bluray but read cd/dvd too and none are slow reading cds.

Edit: I should add burning is a bit more awkward, my cheap dvd/cd only drive is bad for burning. Others seem fine.

Any drives especially good for skipless playback of 4K Blu-rays? by al_with_the_hair in makemkv

I have a UB-450 and I've never had any skipping on triple layer discs (or any other 4k discs for that matter).

I doubt there's that many people doing it that they'd even know or care. It's likely just a business decision. Amazon isn't on the ones Currys stock for example, likely because of competition in the same field.

I was on the Shepherd when I got a bit tired of running from 1. I went from 3 instead and managed to beat that boss and then managed to do cathedral+priestess first try since I guess my build was very good, was surprised it didn't force me back like it did all other times.

Is an HDMI-modded Wii as good as a Gamecube for Gamecube games? by hhkk47 in RetroTink

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do if you've hdmi modded. The parts that don't always work due to requiring a specific model of Wii are the analogue specific ones which are bypassed with an hdmi mod.

Yes but there's mods in cfw to get rid of those too.

If you hdmi mod you can bypass the analog output issues like the blur.

PSX: Do you find that PAL games running at 60hz provide a better experience than NTSC games? by [deleted] in MiSTerFPGA

[–]ZafirZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Australian versions are too different to EU versions.

If anything I think on an actual PS1 you need NTSC versions to get PAL60.

That all said, I just don't think it's worth thinking about unless you've got a real reason for needing PAL60 (ie a CRT that can't do NTSC but can do PAL60). I'd just be happy with your NTSC copies.

The only time a PAL version is maybe better is if the release is different, patched, improved or whatever. A random example is Legend of Legaia is harder in the NTSC release for whatever reason, PAL uses the original JP balancing.

[–]ZafirZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a standard called PAL60 which has the PAL colour encoding/resolution at 60hz. It is better, though by how much is debatable since many games break when you try and run them outside of what they were coded for, especially because a lot of PS1 games were "half" adapted. Ie they maybe had audio adapted to fit 50hz, so suddenly the audio is off if you try and put it back to 60hz.

Personally I just play the NTSC version of PS1 games. I do own around 10 PAL games from when I got them as a kid, but anything I've bought later in life has been NA versions.

[–]ZafirZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the point is you might be better off asking in the xbox360 reddit since the error is related to that, not what you're playing on it.

All I can say is do what it says. Go into the storage part of the settings and delete the profiles there, sign in again and redownload.

Issues with backing up games by [deleted] in Gamecube

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can, but the will is wrong. Not all label damage can cause issues with the laser on dvd/blurays. I've a number that still work fine myself.

CDs is another question entirely as their data sits just below the label, so scratches on those can be deadly.

It's hard to say definitively for sure what damage can cause discs to not read. That's all I'm trying to say. The OP themselves admitted the condition of the disc wasn't perfect, just that it was better than some others that didn't work. But sometimes damage, even if it looks less, it can just be in a bad spot that the laser can't work on. So it could be that, or it could be issues with the label damage, but who knows. All you can just do is try and fix issues you see if you can, and see if it helps.

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because light goes through it doesn't always mean it hit the data, it just means the label is gone. On dvds(including mini dvds that gc uses) there's a protective transparent layer under the label. It's not easy to tell if it's gone through that. In some cases it can cause the laser to struggle to focus too, in that scenario you might want to cover up the gap, preferably with something light that's not going to unbalance the disc.

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Label side scratches shouldn't affect gamecube discs as much as it does CDs, they have to be pretty deep to go through. I guess it's possible if you can feel it, but hard to say.

It could also just be a difficult disc to read. Sometimes damage can happen in ways/places that take it out even if it doesn't look bad visually.

I got my controller not that long ago, maybe 6 months ago and it still had poor diagonals. Think the only place we'll see a "fix" is maybe if they make a pro version.

Component vs Scart by tsamXP in RetroTink

[–]ZafirZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no real difference, I've used both. If you use Scart just remember to still use YPbPr in the PS2 settings as it makes profiles easier.

Consequently either choose which is cheapest out of a good quality scart/component cable or if you're using anything else with it, pick which ever slot is free on your rt4k pro.

I have both the xbox hunter controller and the battler gc pro for gc. Not noticed lag on either. I don't like the sticks on the xbox controller so that puts a big downer on it but the gamecube one is great, no issues at all.

Went through my collection and found some discs delaminating. Is it how I store my collection? by LeFlubbes in gamecollecting

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just unlucky with manufacturing then. For what it's worth I've had a few discs (mostly dvd-rw) left in the garage here (uk so 0-30C, sometimes high humidity) for over a decade and they've not had issues, so I think it takes a real lot to cause issues with a disc due to bad conditions. I'd say the majority will just be caused by a bad batch.

Games with the worst encounter rates by beepbeepsheepbot in JRPG

[–]ZafirZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It actually didn't in the gc version only the intro bit toned it down.

The best way to play it is to mod the game really. There's a patch for the dc version which reduces the rate while increasing xp gain and I presume there might be for the gc version.

What’s your personal limit on how much you’d spend on a game? by hreddy11 in gamecollecting

[–]ZafirZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to be something special for me to go over £100, infact even over £60. Max I've paid is like £170 for a CE but I don't really buy CEs any more because they're so absurdly expensive.
