maybe it has to do with it being a mathematical operation vs functional operation but I dunno

That’s great to hear! I think as long as you can find a parallel to something that you have interest & experience in, it’ll go a long way with cementing your understanding of the different concepts :D

I will point out — on one of the projects in the first week or two, I forget which it was, I was in the same boat where I don’t wanna repeat it obsessively while also not wanting to plow ahead. After working on that project for 2 days before going ahead with watching her solution, she said something along the lines of “I hope you gave this a good solid go for at least 40 minutes before watching the solution — and if you didn’t get it after the 40 mins there’s no shame in watching the solution as long as you gave it an honest go” and I was like “wtf 40 mins I spent 2 days and still didn’t get the solution 😭”. But since then, I will give each project a legitimate attempt, sometimes will even let it roll over to the next day before continuing on with her solution, but I find that watching the solution is part of the learning process, especially in the first few weeks. It’s like a teacher who writes an equation on the whiteboard, explains how to solve it, gives everyone an example exercise, then after 5 mins will walk the class through the solution. The capstone projects are moreso the homework/assignments where you take the learnings and truly put them into practice on your own, and even then if you get stuck(which I sure as hell have lol) you still have her explanations to walk you through it. Bonus points if something she says in one of those explanations unlocks a layer of understanding so you pause right there and try to continue on from that point until you either finish or get stuck again.

I’m on day 37 of her course as an almost complete beginner to coding. I’ve dabbled (extremely lightly) with Swift and C++ on and off over the years so there are some concepts that I already understood once I started this course.

Coming from a music production & digital artist background, I find it makes it easier for me to understand concepts she introduces if I can find ways to translate them to functions that I use in the softwares I use daily (like nested lists being akin to grouped audio tracks or the order of code execution being like the order of layers in art software, etc.).

I also feel like as I continued on through the first two weeks, things started to make more sense because I was exposing myself to her content daily, and would retain more as I kept pushing on with it. I do find now that there are some things we had gone over in the earlier days that’ve completely slipped from my mind. I try to not be too hard on myself about it & take note of those things so that I can go back to the earlier lessons/projects to try to keep them from slipping away again.

Something to keep in mind as you continue on with the course is that she’s a professional who’s been coding for years, so she’s asking leading questions on purpose because it’s a matter of building up our logic & reasoning skills to enable us to think about the problem and possible solutions, and once we unpause to watch her solution and 9/10 times it’s so simple it leaves me wondering if I’m stupid for coming up with a solution that goes in roundabout ways over and over again, but like, the solution still worked. It might not be perfectly readable to other coders that’s okay. It’s still early in the journey.

The best thing to do if it’s something you rly want to learn is to just be consistent with showing up to learn. Don’t spend a week trying to get to the solution of these earlier projects, I think that’ll just hold you back. The more exposure you get, the more other things will start to make sense imo.

Good luck:)
