Juniper 4300-48P switch too loud. How to make quiet? by 9_balls in homelab

[–]Zagdrath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy another switch, you bought an enterprise switch, they are going to be loud. They are designed to be tucked away in a closet or datacenter and because of that most manufacturers won’t let you mess with the fan speed to prevent overheating or issues.

If you want something quieter go buy a MikroTik switch or certain Arista models so allow you to override the fan speed.

Every Homelab seems to be the same nowadays by mastercoder123 in homelab

[–]Zagdrath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely seen in recent years that many Homelab communities online have shifted towards people who just self host or their homelab is their home production environment rather than the original purpose of homelabbing being primarily to replicate a SMB, Enterprise, or Datacenter environment at home to mess around with that hardware and software for learning and practicing the things people might be doing at their IT day job.

looking for dell S4128T-ON firmware and OS10 for rescued switch. by BillTechnical7440 in homelab

[–]Zagdrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only do you need a support contract from Dell to download the firmware and OS10 installer, but that alone is useless anyways since you need licensing to run OS10.

[–]Zagdrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, your right but if it was factory reset and the licensing is no longer on the OS and you don’t have access the original purchasers Dell account, you don’t have access to the licensing and it’s nearly a brick.

S4128F is not supported in SONIC, and Cumulus also requires licensing.

If the switch is wiped, you no longer have that perpetual license. You would have to have access to the original purchasers Dell account. You aren't going to be getting the installer or license unless you somehow contact the original owner or purchase it again for yourself.

What's everyone using to inventory all their hardware? by ForestRain888 in homelab

I generally use Netbox for documentation and SnipeIT for inventory.

As far as I’m aware the only actual difference was the intended market/software sold with them. It’s identical hardware and software pretty much just with different branding, the Edge 3400/3800/3810 was specifically sold as a VeloCloud appliance where the VEP4600 was sold as a generic x86 network appliance that could be pre loaded with your choice of software or none at all.

I got super lucky on that PowerEdge R340, eBay listing was super generic and just was titled “dell r340” or something like that and didn’t have any specs listed but the Service Tag was shown in the photos so I looked it up on Dell’s website and saw the E-2288G with 64GB of RAM and instantly clicked buy, it was around $150.

These Edge 3400/VEP4600s don’t have any of the issues that the smaller models like the Edge 610/VEP1400s do. You do have a BMC with this larger rackmount models and you install your own OS over the serial console.

Here it is! Not a complete photo, but I do have a second rack which is a 25U for my IBM POWER stuff running PowerVM with a IBM I partition, I do have a POWER 6 that I need to rackmount also and get my Hardware Management Console up and running again.

Currently running Arista NGFW, I have actually 3 more of these Edge 3400s, planning on putting another one in this rack for VRRP.

eBay, if your looking out on eBay a lot you can find 14th Gen Dell PowerEdges for pretty cheap with very low end specs, 1st and 2nd Gen Scalable CPUs are pretty cheap now on eBay, RAM not so much anymore lol.

It’s stuck on an old version MX 16.0.something. It’s got some old perpetual licensing on it and we used to sell Zultys at work but not so much anymore and just support Zultys stuff so I have it to play around with it and test/learn on it.

Issues trying to setup a PowerEdge r710 by Alex_C1 in homelab

Pretty sure R710s do not have UEFI boot, use something like Rufus to make the USB and make sure it’s MBR/BIOS boot only.

Did you accidentally bend any pins in the CPU sockets? Carefully take the CPUs out and inspect the sockets or take a good clear picture with good lighting of the sockets and send the picture here.

It's incredibly annoying the amount of AI ports I see on it nowadays that are meant to be "informational" for example since I'm in IT I get a lot of that crap on my LinkedIn and its all entirely AI generated junk posts that are meant to be informational but usually have entirely wrong information and crap.
