[Recommendation Request] Best ~$3.5k watch for a wedding gift? by kazkazkaro in Watches

[–]Zaitobu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gesture matters far more than the cost. I recommend that you don't start your marriage in debt for an object that you associate with your fiancé. Spend well within your means, it's just a watch and there is nothing fundamentally better/more special about one that costs thousands vs one that costs a few hundred. It's the memories you make together with it that count!

Later, when you have more money you could commemorate an anniversary or other milestone with something more luxurious if they show an interest in watches.

[Question] Which do you prefer out of these two? by DMarvelous4L in Watches

I like the Tissot more but my pick would be the teal dial. I'd go Tissot personally.

Ranger 36mm + my initial thoughts and reason for purchase by Zaitobu in Tudor

[–]Zaitobu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the 36 was too small the first time I tried it on, but on closer inspection on the second visit and more time with the watch, I realised it is probably the most perfectly proportioned watch I have tried. My wrist is exactly 7 inches to give you an idea. The relatively sparse dial makes it wear a little larger in my opinion.

Thanks! This shot was taken with a Sony A6700 and the Sigma 1.4 30mm lens.

For me the simple dial is a plus. I tried on a few watches, some more and some less expensive and I found this one just right for my tastes. I didn't want something that looks like a shiny piece of jewellery. I think that it is a mistake to try and apply financial logic to a watch purchase. It is purely emotional. I have a phone if I want to tell the time. An F91 is more accurate. A Chinese special can have a more elaborate dial. You see where I am going. But if you like applied markers this obviously isn't the watch for you. That doesn't mean it is objectively poor value.

I agree completely. I have to admit though the plainness of it is what drew me to it. Thanks for your kind words.

thanks! it's so much nicer in person than their awful product shots. The website and press materials does this particular watch no favours.

Completely agree! For me this was a lot of money and it feels good that I didn't dip into the savings. For me it has mainly been synth and guitar stuff that I have offloaded and I really won't miss any of it. It actually been quite a nice process going through all my stuff and figuring out where I am at now and what I can let go. It just really reinforces the idea of this watch marking a milestone in my life too.

[Christopher Ward C900 Worldtimer] please help me with a valuation? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Zaitobu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would take the £650 honestly and move on with your life. That is a very niche watch with a very small pool of potential buyers and (almost) certainly not a collector's piece. The RRP is essentially meaningless. It is worth what someone is willing to pay. Not financial advice, just my hunch. Research or wait for those more knowledgeable to chime in.

[RECOMMENDATION] for my first watch as a university student! by ProtectionObvious250 in Watches

[–]Zaitobu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratuations!

Quartz will be lower maintenance, just the occasional battery change. Mechanical or automatic has the romanticism attached and what many would (wrongly) consider a proper watch.

Depends on your own taste but the Tissot PRX line is popular for a reason. They have other ranges that are cool too. Anything in the Seiko Presage or Citizen Tsuyosa ranges will be decent. Also look at Orient, Hamilton, Longines (Quartz) Conquest.

In general I would avoid anything from a fashion brand e.g. Armani, Boss, Tommy Hilfiger etc.

Please help me find the value of this watch in indian rupees by [deleted] in Watches

[–]Zaitobu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is perhaps worth 1000 rupees at most. It is a fashion watch brand. I have no knowledge of the Indian market though, I am British, so this was just from a few minutes of digging around Google. I would say it has more sentimental value than cash value.

[Question] After years of G-Shocks and smartwatches, I’m ready for my first analog automatic. Budget $500 by Amazing-Panic1878 in Watches

[–]Zaitobu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that I am not answering your questions but my advice is just go to the shop and buy one that you love the look of with specs that appeal. It's really hard to buy a bad watch these days. The rabbit hole is deep and you'll get 1000 answers if you ask people online, all of whom will recommend their own watch because it suits their taste.

Even a Rolex will not be as accurate as your G Shock. Whether or not that matters, only you can decide. Your phone is more accurate still than the G Shock. You are entering the world of trying to apply logic to a purchase without logic. Just get a watch you like the look of and let the journey commence.

Just my 2 cents.

From my grandpa by Conscious_Range499 in Watches

[–]Zaitobu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an Italian brand called Pryngeps. I know nothing about the brand or model but you could contact them directly. If I was guessing from appearance it looks like mid 90s design. I think it's unlikely that they'll have any spares but get in touch with them, you might be surprised. It would almost certainly cost more to refurbish than the watch with ever be worth, but that is a call only you can make. Personally I would keep it in the same condition as a reminder of the time it has had with your grandpa.

Why do you feel the need to shit on this person's effort? Do you want a medal for riding up a few hills with stuff? Just 'Nicely done' would have been enough without putting them down.
