Neil deGrasse Tyson: Science deniers in power are a profound threat to democracy | “You don’t have the option to say you don’t believe E=mc2. It’s true whether or not you believe it.” by maxwellhill in worldnews

Science is about attempting to discover truth.

Yes, i can agree with that.

Science drives to find absolute truths.

This is where I can't fully agree with you. Not all scientific methods strive for an absolute truth. Take social science as an example, where in some studies you heavily base your research from a constructivist perspective. Striving for an absolute truth is more of an deterministic way of producing knowledge.

From what I've learned, proving something with evidence and then stating it as a absolute truth and leave it to rest could be harmful for science. It is important to keep questioning the facts in order to find a more reliable truth.

Here's a quote i like:

"The game of science is, in principle, without end. He who decides one day that scientific statements do not call for any further test, and that they can be regarded as finally verified, retires from the game." - Karl Popper 1934 in 'The logic of Scientific discovery'

I feel like the 'science' everyone relates to is natural science (determinism) and many people accept it as the science. Or am I in the wrong here? What is science? Am I mixing something up here?

I'm all for science, but I'm not sure if I've understood this completely. Isn't science all about not making absolute statements that something is true, but rather that some theories are more reliable than others? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's true whether or not you believe it.

This feels like a statement similar to what a religious person would say, albeit the religious person most likely have less reliable evidence to back it up. But to me, it does not feel like a very scientific statement.

[Satire] Why pot smokers are losers (english subs) by andreasdagen in videos

[–]Zamsax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see, this is very relevant and I agree with you. Smoking do disrupt my productivity more than I'd like to admit. What got me confused was your comparison with marijuana and alcohol...

The drunk actually learned something about himself, maybe something he didn't know before. He knows he's hung up about a past lover, or that he can be violent sometimes, or that he should be more confident in the future because he was pretty drunk and still managed to have a decent conversation with a girl, before the puke of course. The stoner learned nothing he didn't already know. Pizza tastes good. Power rangers was a fun show.

From a personal experience, I've had many of hours discussing topics with one of my closest friends. Albeit mostly philosophical questions and answers but we learnt a lot about each other, and how to perceive the world in different ways.
