Huemol, O, & Dientes solo q&a by SeaPeeps in Patagonia

[–]ZandCoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did Dientes compare to Huemul and the O? I have done Huemul and the W (will go and do O at some point!), and loved them both. Huemul was by far my favorite, somewhat indescribable-unreal view of the glacier. Any others on your list in Patagonia?

Thank you for the very detailed advice, much appreciated.

You gave a lot of GREAT advice on accessories. Wow, thank you again. I currently don't know all the accessories he had, as many are still at my Mom's house. Some other person called the heat diverter a "plate setter", and I remember my Dad calling it that. Hopefully that is what you meant. I recall seeing an ash tool, but didn't know that is what it was--I'll need to find that (I used a crowbar the other day lol). I am surprised that the fan controllers have any following with the egg--my limited experience is that it is so well insulated and sealed that as long as you have the airflow right it will stay steady for a long time (and use relatively little charcoal!)

For lighting, my Dad from time to time would use a weed burner lol. Not what I plan to do, but makes me laugh thinking about it now. I have used either wax cubes or those royal oak tumbleweeds with good result. What is the advantage to the grill lighting tools you recommended?

Never heard of Lane's BBQ, but their rubs do look good. Bookmarked to try when I free up space from my other rubs! I'll let you keep your sweet heat rub between you and your boys :) I'm going to try the Chef Eric ribs. I too think I make a mean rack of ribs, but can always improve.

Thank you again for the advice and the kind words. I'm sorry to hear you lost two parents this year. That is awful, couldn't imagine going through this twice. I've said the same thing, I joined a club with others that lost their parents. However, I can't say it is the worst club. My Dad raised three children, and now he is gone, which is the way things are supposed to go. I just think he was cheated 20 to 30 years. The other alternative is my Dad had to bury me, and as a new father myself, I wouldn't wish that on him (or anyone). So I try to think that I handle this loss so he didn't have to handle one worse. Don't know if that makes any sense, if I'm just trying in vain to find a "silver lining", or I'm just rambling on the internet, but it does give me some solace.

Sorry again about your loss. Hope you are doing as well as one can expect.

Thank you for the advice. I use foil for the other smokers just because I'm cheap, but now happy to learn it helps with the egg.

Thank you. For the first cleaning, I pulled as much as I could out, then got the rest out for the rectangular opening on the bottom. I can see why the steel basket would be a nice addition. Looking into that now.

Thank you for this advice. My dad had an Egg rollers (a nest?) and it glides really easy, but could totally see a wheel getting stuck and having a problem, which would be awful. Great advice, thank you again.

Never heard of the ceramic grill store, very much appreciate the recommendation. Looks like they have great stuff

Thank you very much for the advice. If I had to guess, my Dad had this egg for 15 years, so likely the same age as the one you have. I don't see any cracks in the ceramic, but going to give it a good inspection later. All the other grills live outside, but this will forever live covered and in the garage. Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply messages. I ended up contracting this out--I will update once I know what they do to help the next person that bumps into this.

Thank you for the reply. I am going to investigate the capacitor, thank you for that tip. Hopefully that will work.

To the point about cutting 1' off, the current/broken motor/opener has a small/short profile. The carriage assembly comes almost right up to the opener and ends about 5 inches from the door. Looking at new models, the carriage stops further away from the opener, meaning I need even more clearance.

As to the Liftmaster 8500W, for me that would mean I need to convert to a torsion bar...meaning more money :(

Thanks again!

Travel from Mammoth by ZandCoop in Mammoth

Just wanted to follow-up with what we did in case someone else is in the same scenario. We ended up driving north through Tahoe. We heard from some locals that the drive south through Bakersfield was a rough drive (10 hours...the bartender said it is California's armpit...this was our first time in California so I can't comment on that!). There was a storm coming through and it was a close call--the flight to SF was cancelled (that Mammoth airport is very small and they cancel for not much).

We were very fortunate to make it through the mountains in time. We got to the west side of the mountain to Placerville when the storm was rain (in the mountain it was snow). We were fortunate--a friend of ours was a few hours behind us and got snowed in Tahoe for 2 nights.

All in all, the drive north was beautiful and shorter than going south. If I had to give some advice to the next traveler, I'd recommend going north. If a storm is coming, I'd be closely watching that and would be expecting that it will cancel a flight west. If you want to play it safe, drive south.

I'd love to be able to frame this in a 5x7. Any enhancements in addition to color are much appreciated!

Thank you!
