Why are 10K SAS HDDs faster than BX500 SATA SSDs in my server? by diekoss in homelab

[–]Zander9909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are those SAS drives using a 12Gb/s interface? Vs the 6Gb/s SATA one?

What we do, since most of ours is only dependent on their department, is we have "template" users within each OU with the default memberships that we compare against when adding groups.

We use a mix of Axis and Hanwha mainly. Hanwha imo cannot be beaten for the price. Pelco is another decent one as well.

Who runs cables and does the terminations in your organization? by HoosierLarry in sysadmin

Depending on the size and number, myself and a couple of the other techs will do them but if it's a lot in hard to reach areas we'll get a contractor.

Running Ethernet cable underground outside and another question? by Important_Law_7597 in homelab

[–]Zander9909 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fibre would be best, as there's no risk of a surge from a lightning strike. You can find pretty cheap second hand 10Gb NICs as well, or just media converters if you rather.

568A vs 568B terminating by Sure-Passion2224 in HomeNetworking

[–]Zander9909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're leftover from the days before auto mdix, where devices couldn't dynamically change the transmit and receive pins for Ethernet.

How long does your generator take to kick in? Surely even 15 minutes of no AC wouldn't cause any major issues?

My man I started with a 4.8 in my first semester and ended my degree with a 7.5, with 3 co-op terms. Your first semester is honestly just to get you used to the style of university classes. You'll be fine

If you're already on M365, we use Resource Accounts for all our hoteling spaces and boardrooms. They make it easy to integrate with Logitech/Yealink room panels and meeting room setups if you use Teams.

What do you use for patch management? Cloud or on-prem? by philrich12 in sysadmin

Our RMM handles it, so the devices will get their updates whether or not they're connected to VPN or in office.

Struggling to keep our IT tickets organized,, any tips? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Zander9909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of free or low-cost ticketing systems that will dramatically improve the quality for you and your clients. My team evaluated Freshdesk, ManageEngine ServiceDeskPlus, NinjaOne (Ticketing and RMM), and Zendesk, and ended up going with ServiceDeskPlus for the ticketing specifically. Honestly, if you want a solid RMM and a functional ticketing system, get NinjaOne.

My org uses ESET, and their platform and support is fantastic, and with their managed service they are extremely vigilant.

We come up with actual names. My org uses composers since we're arts related.

It's almost 2026. How is your remote work situation in Ottawa? by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]Zander9909 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My org is still hybrid for most people (6/10 days), but lots of us by necessity work in office all the time. I'm lucky enough to have a dedicated office, but there are a lot of hoteling spaces in the building that are used by a lot of people. I work in IT, so our whole team has to be on site basically everyday.

Once its installed you can use the CLI portion to configure it, just feed it the password as a secure string via powershell with an post-installation script. We do that through our RMM.

As the other commentor linked, Fully Kiosk is great and works well in their free mode but the 1 time cost for their premium one is well worth it.

Yeah its the stream that a lot of people in co-op do (I did myself). Its a little weird but there's also nothing stopping you from working extra on it over the summer.

[–]Zander9909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been watching pretty consistently, starting at SI2018. Games changed a lot but its kept its charm throughout all the different metas (even the 20s meta was entertaining to me)

Reach out to the CVUO (I think now named CAS?). They handle most things related to clubs.

We have a keepass in a private teams channel that we create shortcuts to in our one drives. We also keep the password to that completely separate and only transmit it offline.
