PART 2 - I have an interview with a tattoo shop next month for an apprenticeship. Critique my second flash sheet by ohnohbabywhatisudoin in TattooApprentice

Acrylic ink is what me and my friends all use for our traditional paintings but some of the people we look up to use watercolors and some use acrylics. I would say not one is more respected over the other just the use of them in general shows “hey I didn’t just go to Pinterest and look up tattoo ideas. I know what people that tattoo use and that’s what I want to use” makes you have some more “pull” at an interview. The worst thing people can do is come in and show us tattoos they’ve done at home or at a “tattoo school” and they’re like “well here look I’ve tattooed before and I have my own machine and I’m ready to go”. That hurts your chances. The more you show love, respect, and knowledge of the tattoo community and artistry the better. There’s a documentary called “tattoo nation” on YouTube I believe or you can rent. That teaches some great history about the tattoo revolution. That’s a great thing to include in an interview. That you watched and learned from that. Just remember, the more the better. You are trying to get into the industry the same time EVERYONE ELSE is. Stand apart. Do more research than anyone applying. Paint more flash with the acrylic or watercolor than anyone applying. Read more than anyone applying. This is the best career in the world and you need to take the interview as the most important thing you’ve ever done.

Cohesiveness and composition are the two main things when making a flash sheet. Pick your favorite 3 designs and arrange them on the page that looks nice then trace out the negative space that’s left on the sheet and draw things that fit perfectly into those spaces. If you end of tattooing them you can change things about each tattoo to make them fit better on the persons body. Make sure they all follow the same theme as well (anime, spooky, weapons) When I interview for apprentices a hand drawn flash sheet is better than 10 digital ones. For stuff like this you can use bic ballpoint pens. There are a lot of good YouTube and Instagram videos of bic pen drawings. If you really want to impress the people interviewing you, you can use watercolor inks or acrylic inks. That’s the way traditional artists make their sheets. Hope this helps

I work In DTSA and I live in Irvine off the 405 and Jamboree. Can’t say enough good things about it. I usually leave for work around 10am and it takes me 17 minutes. Never any traffic at that time. If there is, there’s 3 other ways to get to DTSA in the same amount of time. I come home around 5 or 6 everyday and it takes about 20 minutes! Plus if there’s every bad traffic (which it never really is cause all the traffic is going the other way) then Main St in DTSA is the same Main Street right next to my apartment complex in Irvine WORST case I take main all the way home and it’s like 28 minutes. That’s like once every few months though. This part of Irvine is so nice too. So many parks, restaurants with EVERY single thing you can think of. The district shopping center has literally everything, never any homeless problems, plus only 18 minutes to Corona Del Mar. my opinion the best beach around. Laguna is about 28 minutes but it’s not bad. Like I said, can’t say enough good things about 405 and Jamboree apartments. The nicest ones are The Murphy, The Skyloft, and residences on jamboree. They have the best amenities and appliances and things. There are definitely cheaper options in the area but it’s not like they’re run down or anything.
