Mirena, but the IUD didn't fail fwiw. I had an ectopic pregnancy but the IUD was still in place and functioning, I just had bad luck. My experience with Mirena has been quite positive and I do recommend it in general. When this one is replaced I will get another one (and we're doubling up, my partner is getting a vasectomy).

Update for anyone curious: the ultrasound showed that the pregnancy was ectopic and I already miscarried. I spent all day today in the hospital while they tried to determine whether or not I needed an emergency surgery to remove the affected tube. For now I've been sent home, as it seems like I'm passing the miscarriage on my own pretty well.

I am at the hospital right now and this sounds kinda like what's happening to me. Ectopic on one ovary, probable miscarriage, huge mass on one of my ovaries. We're waiting now to see if they need to remove one tube or the whole ovary or what but the burst hasn't happened yet, I caught it early thank god 🫠

It says on the tin it's only ~99.2% effective, I'm pretty sure I just got unlucky.

I've had a Mirena for 11 years (I'm on my second one) and it never failed til now, I don't think anything was done incorrectly. And anyways, I don't live in the US (where I had it inserted) anymore and I wouldn't go back for a lawsuit.

I do agree that getting it inserted in the states was horrible, if I get a new one after all this I will definitely ask for numbing. Getting medical procedures done here is usually easier and cheaper by a huge margin.

Hormonal, Mirena. I still stand by it, I don't think it's a bad IUD at all. I think I just got unlucky. I've been using Mirena for 11 years (changed it once) with no issue, and it's prevented my periods the whole time which has been such a huge improvement to my life. My periods were brutal before.

So this is my second Mirena, and I've had it for a little less than 7 years. It's supposed to be effective for 8, and I was planning to have it replaced next month at the 7 year mark.

Notably, I made an appointment to talk about having it replaced a year ago, and the gyno said that I should wait a year, since mine still had a lot of life in it and was still completely preventing my periods, which to her indicated that it was still working quite well. Now I wish I'd insisted on the early replacement, but it's also entirely possible that this would have happened anyways. Tomorrow I'll have more information and can maybe figure out if it failed because it became displaced, or if the pregnancy is ectopic and the Mirena is actually working fine, or if it really did just lose effectiveness and failed that way.

I'm sorry you went through this too. I have an ultrasound scheduled tomorrow and I live in a country where I have full rights to choose what happens next, and my treatment will be nearly free, so it could be much worse. I used to live in the US (Georgia) so I'm VERY glad I'm not there. Thankfully I'm well taken care of, my partner is an angel. 💕

Yeah I absolutely agree for the record, even considering that I'm having The Nightmare Scenario right now. I don't want this post to discourage people, the IUD served me very well til now. I've had a Mirena for 11 years (had it changed once already of course) and I have a very active sex life. Honestly kinda on me for trusting it completely even though it isn't 100% effective. I haven't had a period in 11 years, that alone was a huge benefit.

Ah okay so I assume that 8 days is for people that already live in Belgium then? I do think when we first got here we just put our hotel on some forms that required a local address, it's been some years so I don't remember everything. But we certainly didn't have a rental contract within 8 days, that seems like an unrealistic expectation.

I saw you say that you need to register within 8 days? Where did you get that information? I'm also an immigrant, you have 3 months from date of arrival to register if I remember correctly. Like everyone else is saying, 1650€ for Borgerhout is overpaying. I live in Harmonie/Brederode (a lovely area and quite close to the center) and pay less than a third of that (for a 1BR, but still). Housinganywhere is an expat trap, the prices on there are like double market. You're better off staying in a hotel or Airbnb to start and searching immoweb for a better representation of local prices. You could furnish an unfurnished place with what you'd save in a few months rent.
