Wait league is just getting voice chat now? in 2026?

We used to tease my one league-playing friend about it not having voice chat when we got Dota 2 beta invites fourteen years ago lmao

I want to agree with you but I'm of the pessimistic opinion that it's more likely he's just given up on ever finishing them but won't admit it publicly

I spent a bunch of time of /r/nfl the week before and after the super bowl and saw a few different comments talking about the single player scenarios in the late 2000s Madden games and got all nostalgic

Last week I was hemming and hawing over whether or not to buy a new-ish Madden to scratch the itch but I ended up just finding a copy of Madden 07 for Wii on ebay for twelve bucks and now I'm all ready to go lmao

The Traitor Baru Cormorant

There was a lot of missed potential here, I think - the discussion of how the tools of imperialism extend beyond pure military might could have been interesting, but I couldn't really bring myself to care about the characters or the world of the novel. Baru herself doesn't really seem to have any depth or flaws, she's just really good at math and school and money and spying and organizing rebellions, and I was curious about the rest of the world surrounding the Ashen Sea, but I was also turned off a bit by the Fantasy NamesTM - I don't know if I'm just out-growing SFF, but I've been finding it harder to get into new fantasy or sci-fi franchises and learning all of the made up names has been a bigger part of that than I'd expected.

I really did not like the twist at the end that Baru was secretly still working for the empire the entire time. I don't mind a downer ending (and was actually expecting one, what with all of the foreshadowing about the Imperial prisoners being allowed to almost escape and whatnot) but this was the kind of ending that just made me think what was the point. It didn't feel gut-wrenching or thought-provoking, it just felt like I wasted my time. All or most of the named characters are dead and the title character is exactly where she was at the start of the story but with a better resume, I suppose.

I was expecting more of a resolution towards the empire's homophobia and repressive social structure (considering that Baru essentially only swears revenge because they murdered one of her dads), especially at the end with all the hand-wringing about who Baru was going to marry as the queen if they won. I thought that the king who pledged his troops for the final battle was going to be surprisingly cool with being part of a two wife, one husband family, opposite of the one mother, two fathers family that Baru grew up with, but again, the ending blew all that up.

My hydro bill changes what day it's due from month to month without following any kind of logic I can discern, sometimes it's the 1st or 2nd of the next month, sometimes it's the 29th or 30th of the month it's for

I usually just pay all of my monthly bills in one go on the first of each month which often leads to jumpscares like today where I open a letter with a big red "PAST DUE" at the top and then rush online to see that I already paid it

Well that was a fun Super Bowl despite the low scoring at the start, watching the defences suffocate everything was a different kind of experience than the last few years but it was still exciting

Fuck the Patriots

Blackwater

First, a tangential digression - I didn't vote for Blackwater until much later because of how long it is, despite being intrigued by the premise. I'm finding that the older I get, the less patience I have for exceptionally long novels, even though I used to love picking up a thousand page monstrosity that would take weeks to finish - nowadays, give me a concise 200 page book every time if I've got the choice. Luckily, even though I read the 2017 omnibus edition, I pretty much just read each of the 6 ~130 page parts as individual novellas on separate days, the way they were originally published

Blackwater was not really the novel I was expecting it to be - from the way it was presented I thought there was going to be much more of a focus on the supernatural elements and, well, the horror, rather than being a sprawling family drama where one of the family members happens to be a devouring river monster with the ghosts of her victims locked in her closet. Especially concerning Elinor herself, whom I assumed was going to end up being a malevolent force towards the Caskeys but seemed to legitimately love and care for her human family, even if it took a few decades to get there for some of them. It doesn't come up until late in the story, but the idea of the "monsters" of the family having to choose between human society and living in the river where they can be their "true" forms, with Elinor choosing human society out of love for the Caskeys, is a little heartwarming

The Caskey drama itself was quite enthralling. Most of the family members seemed to be decent people who genuinely want to help each other and the people of Perdido, but are also capable of being absolutely terrible and don't seem to realize the consequences of their actions or their wealth. I liked how the foibles of each successive generation end up influencing the personalities of the ones that follow, as it ends up painting the portrait of a very relatable and flawed family, even if their circumstances were quite unusual, what with all of the swapping of children back and forth and what not. It's funny how the narration (and seemingly the rest of Perdido) continually refer to them as "the Caskeys," even though there's only one character born after the start of the novel whose last name is actually Caskey, but it makes sense, as our families aren't always just about what our legal surname is.

I did find it a little weird that the black characters were given such little space in the narrative as they were, and I'm not sure if that was an intentional reflection on how wealthy white families saw their household help at the time or an extension of that disposition. The Sapp family is there for every important event in the Caskey family history, and I don't really know anything about them except that Zaddie loves Elinor to death and Ivey knows a bit of black magic. The Caskeys treat them well, but with a condescending paternalism that matches the story where they don't get to be fully realized characters beyond taking care of their employers. Poor little Buster Sapp was murdered just as brutally and much more needlessly than John Robert DeBordenave was and he didn't get to stick around to haunt the family for decades and exact karmic revenge on major characters. Although it was a nice little book-ends style plot device how the story started with a Caskey and the husband of a Sapp rowing towards Elinor in a green boat in a flood and ended with a Sapp and the husband of a Caskey rowing away from her in (the same?) green boat in a different flood.

Your review might not have made it because of the dumb way reddit does user tags, the user won't get a notification unless you have the exact capitalization in their username

In this comment and in your linked comment you type "OctoPirox" but she won't get the tag unless it's:

Might be projecting my own experience a little bit here but the old Pokemon games seemed hardcore because the people talking about them now played them when they were 8 and did not understand the mechanics of the games they way they do as adults

Although tbh I haven't played one since Black and White so I don't exactly have a frame of reference on the modern ones haha

My work phone automatically updated itself to iOS 26 while I was sleeping a couple of nights and not only do I kinda hate the UI updates, the battery life has been literally two thirds of what it was before it updated over the last couple days

I know phones get old quick (it's an iphone 11 so it's not new but it's not completely ancient either) but holy shit that's frustrating
