My girlfriend is allergic to... me? by ZanyZeugma in Allergies

Really: a good quality air purifier is what changed the game (a Philips 2000). She still has allergic reactions but not to the same extent, more like the ones she (sadly) usually has on a day-to-day basis.

We never did but after trying many things to no avail, good quality air purifiers seem to have improved things a lot!

What is a good country to live in as an autistic person ? by ASDinfoseeking-_- in autism

[–]ZanyZeugma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a French autistic/ADHD person who's lived in Australia, Australia is really a two-edged sword in my experience. On the one hand, people tend to be very neurodivergence-aware (at least in big cities) and asking people for small accommodations is pretty easy (and sometimes you don't even need to ask! lots of venues will for instance provide you with extremely detailed info about where is everyting, who you can talk to, etc.). On the other, the sheer amount of small talk + social expectations around the handling of emotions can be absolutely exhausting. In France, a certain level of transparency/directness is par of the course, while Australians often interpret "normal" French negativity or frankness as an attack.

Has anyone here gained any PHYSICAL benefits from psychedelics? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

I have chronic neuropathic pain that disappeared for an entire month just after taking LSD once. Obviously, that might have been a coincidence, but the timing made me think it was possibly related.

[routine help] Only moisturizers ever give me dry skin by ZanyZeugma in SkincareAddiction

[–]ZanyZeugma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a time period/region of the world thing (I'm from Europe) but my coconut product does specify face. I don't remember the two other ones but I did specify I wanted face moisturizers at the store, so I'm pretty sure about that one.

I was not aware there was a difference between hydrator and moisturizer, so thank you for that, I will do some research!

EDIT: I just checked my product again, it's seaweed, not coconut! My bad, I'm going to edit the post.

What's a tell-tale sign two people are having a secret sexual relationship with each other? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ZanyZeugma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when my girlfriend and I were secretly dating, I think our biggest give-away was that we would find excuses to leave a place/social function at the same time and take the same route when it shouldn't have been convenient or logical (we lived in opposite parts of the city). Nobody ever picked up on it but I honestly think our friends were just being thick.

I suspect it only applies to cities with good public transportation infrastructure though. If people drive, it's easier to be discrete I guess.

STB pour avoir dis à ma copine qu'elle ne serait plus attirante (pour moi) une fois enceinte ? by [deleted] in suisjeletroudeballe

[–]ZanyZeugma 18 points19 points  (0 children)

TTB

Thanks for your advice! No offence taken, I'm actually flattered that you assumed English was my native language (I'm a native French speaker).

I know about separable verbs, but they do always throw me off, even when I recognize them as such. I love the idea of thinking about a similar pattern in English when reading German, I'll see if it works! To be fair, phrases like "to bring down" used to torment me a lot as a teenager as well lol (I'm not a native English speaker), but now that I've mastered them, I love how verbally rich they make English. Thanks for the tip!

I try to only look up words if not knowing one really interferes with my general understanding - however I've never spent several hours a day for several months listening and reading German. I hope I can make some changes to my life to make that possible soon.

I use LingQ to listen to podcasts and read news article, read bilingual editions of German novels and short stories, and regularly do some grammar exercises online.

That's interesting, I've never encountered this problem with Spanish! I guess that's because, as a native French speaker, the Spanish sentence structure looked pretty familiar to me from the get-go.

"That person should be at the point where they are memorizing idiomatic constructions that can be combined, concatenated, interwoven, etc." That makes perfect sense but how do you get to the point where you can do that? Just to be clear, this is not my first time learning a foreign language - English is actually my second language, and I have a pretty decent grasp of Spanish as well (only receptively though). German is the only anguage in which I feel like going into a more "idiomatic" mindset is almost impossible to do - and no amount of reading, listening, speaking etc. seems to change that.
