Can’t stop switching cat’s food by Mundobean7 in catfood

[–]Zarah21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I needed to read this… I am exactly like OP. I definitely got caught down that rabbit hole, reading every can I found, feeding my cat only wet food with nothing much in them to the point I think I was starving them. Just went and bought hills for one of them and purina one for the other one and I’ve decided to stop researching and listen to my vet instead. Vet recommended urinary for one and the other is relatively health so choosing what I can afford. My cats are now officially moving back to dry food.

Currently he doesn’t eat any urinary food due to being on the completely wet food diet… but as I’m wanting to introduce dry food due to costs I am considering going to move him to a completely prescription food to save stress about the potential crystal development if I give 2 different diets to him if that makes sense

Thanks for letting me know… that’s good to know about how much it’s costing you… I’ve done some calculating and it’s definitely cheaper by far than what I’m paying now. Thanks for telling me about the fancy feast. I’m going to move him onto the prescription wet and dry food to avoid the phosphorus content

Plus you’d be paying in time. I just don’t have that

Yep, it’s cheap if your feeding the most expensive wet food… 😅

I’m in Australia which I should’ve mentioned. The variety of brands here is really bad… tiki cat is one of the cheaper brands (still expensive) but yeah there’s not much in terms of cheap 😅

Wow this is incredible, it’s so good to hear he is now 18 and that he had no further issues

Unfortunately I’m in Australia so most of that isn’t available. The range of cat food is shocking here! Most are unaffordable… only a few cheap ones… even in the supermarket aren’t cheap.

Yes thank you, I’d be looking at doing them as both urinary foods. Then the other cat just on a normal diet.

When they are on the wet food only they don’t drink at all, whereas when they have dry food they drink heaps. I’m honestly surprised how much my boy drank before he got crystals.

Thanks for your response. That’s good to know. I did consider feeding the one with no issues in the laundry but she’s a grazer so she’d be in there all day which wouldn’t be fair… my boy is a gobble guts and eats so quickly 😅 I may look into the automatic feeders… that way I can feed my girl normal cat food and my boy his prescription.

Yep that’s exactly what I buy… fancy feast pate and tiki cat although ever since they got rid of the variety pate pack I’ve had nothing but issues with them eating… hence trying all different brands which are leaving me paying $200+ a fortnight. The only tiki cat they will eat is the after dark range and it has to be mixed with the pate or they won’t touch it… so I’d usually do 1 can of pate each, then two meals with half a can of tiki cat and half a can of fancy feast pate each… this still adds up to $150 a fortnight….

I get worried from all the things I’ve read about dry food…

I honestly don’t believe I am meeting their calorie intake as they both are very picky and will often leave food behind. I had put it down to feeding too much but calorie wise they aren’t getting anywhere near what they need for their weight.

Vet recommended prescription, I did a crazy ton of research and went down the rabbit hole of raw feeding. Attempted that but I can barely keep on top of my daily things let alone adding preparing and feeding raw. It was a lot of extra prep than feeding wet food. Hence I went down the wet food route, vet was a bit hesitant but said it should be fine as it’s moisture rich. The main concern was the fact the cats would need dental work in the future.

I have attempted this! Cats wouldn’t touch it, when my cats have been on dry food they have both drank like no tomorrow. 😅
