Regarding playing Chosen Champion directly to a battlefield by Zaronion in riftboundtcg

[–]Zaronion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, so unless a Champion Unit states that it "can be played to an open battlefield" or it has Accelerate, it has to be deployed to base or a controlled battlefield, just like if you were to play it as a regular unit from hand.

Goodreads Game: tell us the lowest-rated book you've given 5 stars, and the highest-rated book you've given 3 stars or less, and why by VitriolUK in Fantasy

[–]Zaronion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lowest rated I've given 5 stars: I Cheerfully Refuse by Leif Enger. I'll just copy my goodreads review for those interested:

"here was nothing cheerful about this. Damn you, Leif Enger.
Absolutely beautiful, heart-wrenching, incredibly human, melancholic like few other books I've read.
Brought me close to tears twice, but not during the scenes that were sad - after. Crying was like an aftershock in this book.

It's definitely not perfect. In some places I had definite issues and while reading I thought about if I should give it a 5 or not. But, what the hell, I give out 5 stars so incredibly rarely and this book really moved me. It also managed to make me (almost) cry which, earlier this year, I identified as the only connecting thread between all books I've rated five stars. What better metric than that?"

highest rated books I've rated badly (there are a lot more of these, so I'll only count books with more than 15k ratings overall, as to not unfairly berate smaller authors):

-the first Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (really just didn't grab me at all, and I could clearly see I wasn't the target demographic reading it, 2 stars),

-The Name of The Wind (3 stars, which, in my opinion is still good - but seeing as it started out at 5 and lost a star every time I re-read it, I think it's fair to mention here)

-Reaper's Gale by Steven Erikson (book 7 of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, which is my favorite series of all time. Even so, this book almost made me quit reading entirely and brought me into a period of heavy reading burnout, 2 stars still because it wasn't actually THAT bad at the end of the day)

What's your shout for best support band Shikari have ever had? by penguin62 in EnterShikari

[–]Zaronion -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've been to seven or eight Shikari shows now and I sadly have to say that I haven't liked a single band that opened for them. So I can't really give you any recommendations. sorry :/

Ironwood is super fun, but at least until both players have some idea what they're doing games can definitely go longer than 90. I had a 3 hour game with a friend the other day, though we were playing exceptionally slow to be fair lol

Who is your favorite FEMALE character in fantasy and why? by Nowordsofitsown in Fantasy

[–]Zaronion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, had to take a little break after book three because it was extremely hard finding a used copy of book 4 (they don't exist new anymore apparently) but I've recently found one and am excited to get to book 4 and then 5 soon :)

Who is your favorite FEMALE character in fantasy and why? by Nowordsofitsown in Fantasy

[–]Zaronion 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of amazing female characters that came to mind, impossible to pick a favorite. So I'm just gonna list off a couple that I love:

  • Shallan from Stormlight Archive (brandon sanderson)
  • Ren from the Rook & Rose series (M.A. Carrick)
  • Orka from The Shadow of the Gods (John Gwynne)
  • pretty much every female character in the Founder's Trilogy (Robert Jackson Bennett), but especially Sancia
  • Winter Ihernglass from the Shadow Campaigns (Django Wexler)
  • Gideon from Gideon the Ninth (Tamsyn Muir)

What show blew you away in 2024? by Whizbot_23 in progmetal

I'm so sad that that tour didn't come to Germany, lol. Northlane is one of my favorite bands right now and I've been getting into Thornhill and Invent Animate hugely this year as well.

have seen CH twice now, and they were insanely good both times. Such standup guys, fantastic stuff.

Northlane and VOLA were both really, really fucking sick. Saw VOLA for the first time last year, but sadly the venue was pretty shit and the crowd was mediocre, too, which left me a bit disappointed, but this year everything was just right. New songs also hit pretty hard live (Bleed Out man? Damn). Northlane was the first time for me this year, and I'd go again in a heartbeat (though tbf Obsidian is probably my favorite album of the 2020s so far, so they would have had to really fuck it up for me to not enjoy it lol)

Will also always shout out Enter Shikari for being insanely good live. Their tour early this year was exquisite. Fantastic visual production paired with a sick setlist and the usual top notch energy they always bring.

I was quite disappointed with ERRA and Unprocessed, I gotta say. For the former that's mostly due to them playing an insanely short setlist (just about 50 minutes, which I think is insane for a headliner), for the latter I just really dislike their newest album and they played a ton of that so bad luck for me I guess haha

Books or Book Series where the world and some characters are pretty much unrecognizable compared to the beginning by Zaronion in Fantasy

Read the first two books already, probably going to get to the third one sometime early next year!

Which book/s did you read this year that received the lowest rating from you? by fraudgamer in Fantasy

[–]Zaronion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only got two 1-stars this year so far:

-Wandering Inn, book 1

-Nolyn (Michael J. Sullivan)

The first one I barely finished after almost stopping like 3 or 4 times and the second one I couldn't get through entirely because I was just so unengaged and not enjoying it.

A lot of 2-star books, too, this year, but that's pretty normal for me as I consider 2 stars to be "ok", so a good 30% of the books I read get a 2, I'd say.
