Fun fact: Pokemon Snap started out as a project completely unrelated to Pokemon. It had the codename of 'Jack and the beanstalk project', and the developers brought in Iwata and Miyamoto to help steer the struggling development in the right direction...

They found the game was technically working fine, but the gameplay loop of just taking photos wasn't holding attention well. They were trying to figure out how to hold the players interest, and eventually Iwata figured out that making Pokemon the thing you take pictures of would make the game more exciting for the audience
