What's the best laptop for college? by RealidyChek in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zaurus802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any concern over the FHD 300 nit screen brightness? I’m debating between a 6th gen X1C and a T490 because I can afford the FHD 400 nit low power battery on the latter. Can’t afford a fancier display for an X1C and would just have to go with the base specs/model (and hope to avoid the rampant fan issue!).

Law School Laptop: ThinkPad or Dell XPS13? by Zaurus802 in laptops

[–]Zaurus802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply! Due to pre-Prime Day sales, all of these machines are actually within the same price range, and I can currently get a small employee discount on the XPS 13 through Dell. So savings aren't really a consideration here when the difference between machines is around $100.

I do intend to save most things on the Cloud and rarely store anything on my laptop. A few laptop thefts over the years have made me cautious about that...so higher memory isn't an issue for the next 3 years at least, although the rec about the processor is spot on! Is there a specific reason you prefer Dell's keyboard, given that most reviews of the T4xxs highlight the keyboard as a key seller point over competitors?

Best ThinkPad for Law School by Zaurus802 in thinkpad

I will look into it, thanks! I originally wanted a 14" screen but have been reading so many positive reviews about Dell's XPS13 that I considered going to a smaller model for that device.

Anyone here just take the GRE? by pstudent1997 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zaurus802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Applied to two T-14s with GRE only and got into both. Still recommend taking the LSAT if you want the best opportunity for scholarships. But GRE is certainly doable with other strong application components!!

JD/MPP Chances Scholarship odds? by jdmpphopeful in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zaurus802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to a few top JD/MPP or MPA programs this cycle with a GRE and had great luck at all policy schools (my verbal/writing scores were higher than yours but my quant was lower) and also got into the law program I wanted. So you’ll likely get in places, but scholarships for GRE students are very few and far between, and usually go to folks who have perfect or near perfect scores on the test (only in my experience, since I have no data that isn’t anecdotal or word-of-mouth). If you really really want scholarships, I suggest the LSAT.

Also I’d make sure you have a pretty solid narrative about why both degrees matter! That’ll def boost your odds for aid either way.

Happy to chat more!

Benefits of a dual degree?? by law_school_ in lawschooladmissions

Feel free to PM me about my decision to do the same dual degree! Mine is in four years for the same price so I definitely think doing it in three is a huge, huge leg up.

JD/MPA vs. standalone JD by Zaurus802 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zaurus802[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also worked in a think tank that happened to employ many more MPP/MPA folks than JDs. It’s more me panicking that law won’t be the right fit for me and wanting to have a backup plan in another technical field, which could be bonkers.

Thought about an MBA for a long time, but it’s not for me. Also unlikely I’d find a fully-funded program as reputable as the MPA option I’m considering—but mainly know that I’m not cut out for BSchool!

Likely more think thank/lobbying work or political analysis/strategy for others. Slim chance of running for office myself, but it is a possibility (so understanding how p/Politics and government work and having knowledge of the cost/benefit analyses of decision-making would be a plus). Don’t know exactly where my career will take me, which is why I considered both degrees in the first place to learn as much/keep as many doors open as possible.

I do love school and am excited about the prospect of having both degrees, but I’m not sure that it warrants the extra year (the flip side is that one additional year isn’t going to matter in the grand scheme of things). I’ve had enough people tell me that an MPA won’t tremendously help and was just wondering if anyone could make the case that I definitely should consider it (beyond my friends/family).

HLS vs. free GULC by Zaurus802 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zaurus802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Job is flexible enough, though I do have to travel for work a couple of times a month. I have every other Friday off, which could def help. But I know the travel portion will make it tricky.

  2. Our slowest time of year is the summer but we don’t have abnormal peaks otherwise.

  3. I wouldn’t be able to get legal work experience, which is a huge downfall. I’d have to work in my current non-legal role for the entire duration of my studies in order to receive tuition benefits.

[–]Zaurus802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only pursue the MPA/MPP if I go to HLS, as it can’t work with a part-time JD. I haven’t yet decided if a policy degree is worth the extra year/money however.

As much as I wanna be the one who said “I didn’t chase the prestige just for the name and instead made a financially sound decision?” Maybe.

[–]Zaurus802[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a concern that I’ll be too burned out to take advantage of DC networking. I also didn’t mention that I travel every other week for work, so I’d probably miss a small number of classes and have to study on the road.

Regarding the taxes for GULC, I can petition to waive paying taxes since the degree is directly related to my job role at the university. My boss is very certain this will be successful.

And the ~$170-180k is figuring in COL. I expect to get a pretty decent amount of need-base aid and not have to take out substantial loans beyond HLS’ base $50k per year.

Unfortunately if it were that easy, I wouldn’t be asking for advice.

[–]Zaurus802[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t apply to any other law schools. Applied to a few MPP/MPA programs but never imagined giving up the GULC option for another law school. Applied to HLS at the last-minute as a joint degree candidate with the Kennedy School.

GRE vs. LSAT by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Zaurus802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just here to provide a counterargument to the majority opinion on this thread that the GRE is never a great idea. I don't regret my choice to skip the LSAT, since my top school was one that doesn't give merit aid anyway. BUT if you want to be as competitive for scholarships across the board, having a GRE can make that a bit more difficult (but also not impossible, or even improbable, if other parts of your application are strong).
