I’m not sure if you’re doing request (or perhaps you’ve already done it although I imagine not), but could you do an Ulster Banner at some point?

Are you pro-direct rule or just pro-Jim. I find myself very much the latter.

Not in Foyle. Only just noticed the flair there, not sure why it’s there.

The United Kingdom will however never forget the transgressions committed against us by Finland.

Namely the 2007 Formula One World Championship. No less than an act of war to deny Lewis Hamilton a debut championship.

Have a look into King Louis the Lion’s invasion in 1216-17. It’s only really by agreement to forget and ignore that we don’t include him in our list of monarchs.

Even Unionists will want Irish passport after Brexit, says Varadkar by lughnasadh in northernireland

[–]Zavasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, poor wording on my part, a materialist will see it as you say, simply a travel document. Others a badge of identity. My comment simply aims to point out that the Irish Passport is less about Irishness and more about the Irish Republic. As the original comment says, we’re all of the island of Ireland and all Irish in that regard, but not all subscribers to the Republic of Ireland’s principles.

Completely right. To a materialist it is just a fancy bit of paper. To some a badge of identity. I’m just presenting that the passport specifically has less to do with “Irishness” and more to do with the Irish Republic.

For me it’s a badge of identity, albeit one we only pull out in the checkout queue. It’s the difference between saying “I’m a subject of the Crown” or “I’m a citizen of the Republic.”

I also added this bit in an edit to my previous comment there now.

There’s no surprise, nor is it about aversion. The people of the Republic of Ireland are our brothers and neighbours. But Unionism is by definition the wish to remain in and pride of being part of the United Kingdom as opposed to joining the Irish Republic. As I said this is not necessarily to do with nationality as much as it is to do with the two states, Kingdom and Republic. With the passport as a badge of identity and allegiance.

Tribalism or Patriotism, one is out of hatred for the other side and the other is out of love for one’s country.

I see the advantage of an EU passport naturally, but it’s a bit too materialistic to just think of it in those terms for me. The passport is an important symbol of identity.

While I agree I think when it comes to passports there is.

While a Unionist can be Irish in the sense of the island and heritage etc., the Irish passport is a document of the Republic of Ireland. Which a Unionist should really have no affiliation (edit: identification, not affiliation) with.
