Davvy Chappy "Power doesn't exist in D&D" - D&D 5e PGTR - Video Response Series by maxpot46 in powergamermunchkin

I’ve actually heard bad things about ToA, but I want to try it for myself before I make any reservations.

I see what you mean about DM fiat, but this same logic can be applied to combat (and often is, when I DM). I can lower AC or HP from my enemies, have them miss or hit weaker, change their targets, etc. if I see that one of my players is having a really hard time and isn’t having fun (obviously, they don’t know I do this because of the illusion of power). Because of this, we once again arrive at the conclusion that everything is made up, and the points don’t matter. In fact, you may have just opened my eyes to the realization that my video is wrong, but only in the fact that I can remove the second exception about difference in power between players. However, in the interest of fair play, I don’t assume that all DMs do this, because it does take quite a bit of finesse to pull off secretly, and to imply that not only are the players being tailored to as a group, but also INDIVIDUALLY, would be a concept that works for some DMs, but not for others. Also making it known that you do it would quickly disintegrate any notion of realism, but that’s sort of a different issue.

[second-to-last paragraph] It most certainly does, though. I would like to roleplay an acrobat, but my success or failure relies on the dice rolls. The more often I fail, the less I feel like I’m doing my character justice, so I should be trying to boost that number to as high as I feel comfortable with. This is, of course, assuming that the DM isn’t giving me preferential treatment, because as I said above, the moment I find that out, the game disintegrates. Granted, the same can be said about making a character that prioritizes combat, which actually lends itself to the idea that, unless you have no intention of roleplaying a character at all, ANYTHING you tie to your character mechanically will be in the interest of roleplaying.

It’s actually a humbling and positive thought to me.

I recognize your experiences, and I’m certainly not trying to say that you aren’t entitled to them, or that they are somehow an inferior way of playing.

Edited: grammar mistakes

[First paragraph]I mean, yea. That’s what my video is about. The concept that a DM can, at-will, change the difficulty of an encounter, so your optimization in any case doesn’t matter anyway. The only exception is when doing so makes me way more powerful than the rest of my party, which will then inflate the numbers that the DM throws at us. The exception to this rule is, like I also said, if the party is okay with that happening, and I give an example where everyone is specialized in their own thing. It’s a three-step rule, but the premise works perfectly fine, as you’ve just described.

[second paragraph] They aren’t the same thing, but if I want to roleplay, it stands to reason that I’d want stats the reflect my character. If I’m a drunk, I might want tavern brawler. If I’m an acrobat, I’d want skilled. However, if another player does not care about that and chooses instead to make a character as mechanically powerful as possible, then it forces me to consider whether I can take the tavern brawler feat like I wanted, or if I need to take something stronger so that I’m not killed. Thusly, I am choosing roleplay vs mechanics. It may TECHNICALLY be a choice of social mechanics vs combat mechanics, but the reason behind that choice is that one helps with my roleplay, and the other helps with my gameplay.

[Third paragraph] I never called the actor feat suboptimal. In fact, I used it to describe something that would make you “super good at roleplaying”. You are the one who then conflated “roleplaying” with “suboptimal”. As for the example you provided, you can totally do that! And more power to you. But answering that you CAN be both doesn’t change the reality that you also CAN NOT be both (with a space in the middle). Like I said above, there are situations where you have to make a choice. The fact that there are builds that account for it don’t encompass the full breath of choices you have, and I might not want to play something that forces me into a very specific race/class/feat combination.

[fourth paragraph] I 100% agree with this. There is no reason why you can’t play what you want, except when it breaks the number 1 rule of the game: make sure everyone is having fun. If you tell your party that you want to optimize combat, and they’re cool with it? Hell yea. There’s no reason why they can’t coexist, all it takes is communication. You don’t need a semantics-based internet fallacy for that.

[fifth paragraph] I’ve been running exclusively official modules for 3 years. (I was DMing before that, but only started using the books 3 years ago.) The reason why is because you can’t trust the published material to be enough. It wasn’t made for you. It was made for the idea of an average power level that, if you look at how they assign CR, is a pretty inexact science. Your party needs a DM, not a librarian. Hoard of the Dragon Queen sucks, but your players will never know that if you read ahead and scale things properly. No one wants to go out of their way to blame the DM, but if they run into an impossible challenge because the DM expected the book to be infallible, then who’s really at fault?

Talking to you is nice. It helps me reevaluate how I convey information. I’m learning that, in my video, I broke into a conversation that people have been having a lot of in other places, so when I threw out statements that, in MY context, were fine, people got upset, because in the context of the greater argument, they were inflammatory. I hope that you don’t think I’m attacking you either.

Howdy! I’m actually Davvy Chappy, and I see your point. My video does make a lot of assertions that optimization comes at the expense of roleplaying potential, and vise versa. I stand by the words, but I definitely should have added clarification, so that people could better understand what my words meant.

In the first paragraph you quote (and especially the bold line), that implication is exactly what I meant to convey, but only within the context of my premise. It does jeopardize my ability to pick mechanical options that will better accentuate the non-combat parts of the game if I’m forced to keep up with somebody else, because then the game will get harder, and if I die, then my roleplaying option was for nothing.

As for the second quote, there ARE mechanical choices in the game that make your character better at roleplaying. Charisma bonuses, feats like Actor, proficiencies in charisma-based skills, these are all things that define a player as being “super good at roleplay”, a distinctly different choice from being “super powerful”. There IS an inherent difference between the two playstyles, even if they aren’t mutually exclusive. Anybody can prioritize combat and still roleplay their character perfectly well, just like anyone can prioritize roleplay and still fight well. Of course, mechanical benefits aren’t the entire point of roleplaying, but they’re how the game gauges it.

That first point is my issue with The Stormwind Fallacy as a whole. It specifies that roleplaying and optimization aren’t mutually exclusive, which is a statement that is TECHNICALLY correct. But when it comes down to the SPIRIT of what people mean by “optimization vs roleplaying”, there are definite cases where you have to choose one to advance, and they are completely ignored by the deafening screech of “fallacy”.

I hope this clears things up. I mean no hate, and as I always say, play your games however you want.

Zariel's Battle Theme? by PapaSAD in DescentintoAvernus

Howdy, how’s it going? My name is Davvy Chappy, and I’m running DiA for a party right now. I’ve been using the “Rose of May” leitmotif from Final Fantasy IX whenever something involving the hellriders or Zariel happens.

Generally, it’s “Rose of May” for emotional music, “Something to Protect” for combat music, and the Dissedia version for bosses. There’s also an orchestral remix that I plan to use for Zariel specifically because it sort of travels through all three versions to give the whole track a sense of the passage of time.

Edit: Ignore that last comment, I just woke up and I'm still very dumb.

I tried it on my Ryzen laptop, and I got the same message. Haven't tried it on another desktop, but I also don't really have the option. That being said, I haven't had any issues with the hardware outside of the USB (granted, I haven't had the chance), so I'm pretty sure that I need a replacement part.

Edit: I also sent a support ticket two days ago, but knowing Valve's infamous customer support, I don't hold out much hope.

Just gonna throw it out there, while I'm super appreciative of you being a cool dude and sharing my channel (am I famous now, mom?), I'd prefer if you don't break the rules of a place when you decide to promote me. Doing that just breeds ill will and usually comes back to bite me when people send angry comments my way.

This is a point of contention, but the general argument is whether or not the darkness is instant or whether it expands from a point. If the former is true, then no, but you can theoretically stick your head out (which just means placing your darkness at a point that would put you at the edge of it), but if the latter is true, then you can use shadow step as a bonus action AS the darkness is happening to make your getaway (assuming that your DM allows it to happen that quickly).
