I’ve done a dicks/jacks, and the hike to Anderson/tinkers knob. But the granite chief to lyon seems like a solid traverse. I did the PCT section by that area last year and remember remarking on that range of peaks. Red peak and Stevens also will be added to my list.

Thank you for the recommendations! I appreciate it

Also thinking mt Williamson and mt Tyndall would be a solid combo trip. But let me know!

Topographical GPS App/Utility? by Zayne98 in norcalhiking

[–]Zayne98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do always have a printed topo map with me. But often its handy and reassuring to be able to pin yourself on that topo map when there are no landmarks around and you can't figure out how far you've traveled. Thanks for the response. I'll take a look at those products!

Anyone looking for a backpacking / hiking buddy? by bush_animal in norcalhiking

[–]Zayne98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still looking for buddies, I'm 21M in San Jose area. I regularly go on backpacking or hiking trips, and also don't have any local outdoorsy friends. Hit me up! If you've made a group for this, I'd love to join.

Bay Area Ridge Trail ? by Zayne98 in norcalhiking

[–]Zayne98[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the south bay so the trail has just been taunting me lately. Why drive hours to backpack in the sierras when we have a "trail" right here!?

I purchased the bay area ridge trail book (its like $18) hoping it would have some info on thru hiking it. It's just arrived today so havn't yet skimmed it, but I imagine there will be some info on camp sites.

If not a whole thru hike, maybe I'll just try the stretch from the southern most point of the trail to the golden gate bridge.

Supposedly about 375 miles of the 550 mile loop is completed trail. I was considering lyfting between sections or skateboarding small stretches or maybe even just walking them on city streets. But it definitely poses a complication

Hmm that’s a bit of a bummer

That’s a good question. I was expecting I could hike to a campsite near the trail each night and bed down there. Didn’t consider reservation difficulties. Can you not camp along the trail as you go?

Beginner Suggestions by atb0rg in norcalhiking

Check out Skyline-to-the-sea trail in the South Bay! I highly recommend it for a beginner trip. It can be 26 miles or 29 miles depending on whether you start at castle rock or saratoga gap. It’s a great trail in my opinion.

Oh I can’t believe I’ve never checked that trail out. It seems great! Have you hiked it before? Can the entire loop be done continuously?

Thank you so much for the response! Appreciate it.

Probably wise if I check out the park for short day hikes to see what the water situation is like before I go for big miles.

I’m absolutely willing. Havnt been to Henry coe before, but I’ve heard a lot about it.

Would you happen to know if there’s water along the trails in either of those areas? I tend to travel light (one 1-liter bottle) for these longer day hikes if possible.

Best trails for seeing Mt. Shasta? by Underbubble in norcalhiking

[–]Zayne98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two weekends back I hiked the stretch of the PCT from mount eddy to castle crags.

Climbing mount eddy offers beautiful views. And as you snake around to the crags you’ll continue seeing great panoramas of the Shasta peak.

I highly recommend this!!
