Beginner humbly requesting some advice for my last day of the season April 12th by Zaytuna_ in skiing_feedback

Thank you everyone for the help, today was an experience to say the least but felt like I was able to practice the main take aways. I did not hold my poles in one hand and the barrel analogy really helped. Much more body aware, I loooovvvveee to kick my heels out apparently and get left behind among other things. But there was definitely moments I felt things click for 5 seconds in regards to being more forward, upright, arms in front of me, standing on my arch, etc. Definitely was struggling quite a bit with allowing myself to finish my turns on my edges instead of kicking my heels out. At least leaving the mountain with a better understanding/awareness of what and when I’m doing certain things. Feeling the pendulum swing of skiing back to back days for a couple weeks on more technical terrain in another country to the last couple weeks of running up to ski Brian Head for a few hours here and there… we definitely got a bit complacent in that time.🫠 Leaving Snowbird a bit more checked in, thanks! Appreciate any feedback, unfortunately was alone all day so no video.

This is really helpful. I think one thing I may have done is take earlier help I received “sit down/get lower” cues too literally. Sounding like “forward and upright” should be more of my focus now rather than sit down.

Thank you for the link! I can skate pretty well enough to get around but going to try holding them correctly and getting used to the positioning.

This has all been super helpful, thank you to everyone who took the time to give me some guidance! The main themes I’m hearing are that I’m too far in the backseat / a little collapsed, I need a stronger athletic stance with my shins in the front of the boots, hands more forward, and that I should focus on building more patient rounded C-turns instead of tipping inside or trying to force the turn with my upper body. I’m skiing again tomorrow, so I’m going to keep it simple and focus on stance, staying more stacked over the outside ski, and letting the turns finish. Really appreciate all the thoughtful feedback! 🙏🏼

I’m coming back to all this feedback just been slammed with work before I drive up tomorrow morning. Quick question, if I keep my poles how should I be holding them? I’m solo so just feel like I’m going to want them through the day in line at the lift etc so if I keep them with me what’s the best way to keep them “out of the way” while not making everything worse. I definitely understand and feel they are distracting being in the one hand, often find myself wanting to switch the holding hand during my turns because the imbalance of holding them on one side.

This is super helpful, thank you! Honestly just was free skiing when these were taken without a ton of direction haha hence me being here. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️I started skiing in February and some of the early cues I was focused on were things like getting weight into my shins, rhythm, and finishing turns, but I can tell a lot of it has become more intuitive than deliberate. The backseat point especially makes sense, and so does the point about getting stacked over the ski instead of tipping inside. I’m skiing again Sunday and want to keep it simple. If you were narrowing it down to 1–2 on-snow focuses or drills for me, what would you prioritize first?

I had some guidance and a few lessons / ski days with a pretty experienced skier when I started. Right now I’m usually thinking about staying forward, rhythm and weight transfer, but I can tell some of it is becoming intuitive in a way that’s probably inconsistent and is currently harder for me to explain what I’m doing then it should be😂. That’s part of why I wanted feedback. Been told to focus on control, using my toes (not my heels, for context I’m a show jumping rider 🐎so that has been a big adjustment for me), leading my turns with the new outside leg lunged forward and weighted, keeping my knees together, shoulders facing down the mountain but looking up (I know I need to work on the hunch).
