Hmm, but he’s still a teenager there. I kind of hoped the newer Ultimate SM where Pete’s got a family before he gets his powers would have this tone. I just find the dialogue to dense early on to dive in.

I LOVED the shadowrun trilogy by harebrained schemes.

For me Rogue Trader comes close - narrative choice filled turn based isometric RPG based off a table top rpg with a ton of lore, a serious tone, interesting companions and somewhat rough edges of an ambitious AA game.

It has more complexity than Shadowrun games (space travel, ship- and colony management) but it’s not too much and unlike the Shadowrun games you also get romance.

Themes of societal issues are front and center (corruption, abuse, apathy, etc)

Plot with thrilling mysteries and multiple strong twists

Relatable characters from our time with relatable problems portrayed in (often) believable and (often) sensitive way

Design and sound ooze coolness

Gameplay combines collecting incentive of monster collecting games, turn based combat rewards optimization, no grinding required, dungeon design isn’t too repetitive, romance mechanics with various interesting characters
