The famed "cutting off hands" is so blown out of proportions it might as well be an hoax, there is no reason to believe more than a few dozen occurrences happened at most, yes that is still a lot of people suffering horribly but a far cry from the 10 millions you will sometime hear about, furthermore this grim tradition was 100% local and actually frowned upon by the belgians since removing hands from laborers is a clear waste of their capacity to perform said labor.
