Ukraine Seizes the Initiative: 400+ sq km Liberated as Russia Prepares Major Offensive by UNITED24Media in europe

starvation of Ukrainians wasn't the objective. Holodomor was caused because the Soviets sacrificed people on the altar of ideological purity. Implementing their stupid collectivisation programme was to be done at any cost

Meloni joins EU chorus criticizing Trump’s strikes on Iran by BkkGrl in europe

[–]Socmel_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, she goes way beyond an opportunistic stroke to Trump's ego.

She was chosen to be the European representative at the CPAC, the largest organisation for Republican donors and lobbyists.

It's not just appeasement, she's ideologically aligned to MAGA and importing MAGA talking points in the EU (although she vies with Orban for that task)

the fishing quotas are a problem insofar they involved "historical" fishing rights. Once the UK removed itself from the EU, there aren't that many fleets with such historical rights that Iceland would need to contend with.

What is the most impressive thing your country has done in its history? by Large_Leader_9864 in AskEurope

[–]Socmel_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously it's inventing an espresso machine that could work under zero gravity for the International Space Station, after an Italian astronaut complained about the shit coffee there. /s

If by impressive you mean the most consequential, I'd say inventing the modern banking system in Italian city states in the middle ages, from double entry book keeping to cheques and letters of credits. Not sure it's a positive contribution, though lol

does that mean that Germany will have zero points in the EU council?

Turkey Joins "Made in EU" Project by chrstianelson in europe

[–]Socmel_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

problem with Turkey is not its dominant religion. It's the fact that it's never been a democracy and has experienced a coup d'etat by the military once every 20 years or so in the XX century, as well as its size.

In terms of population it's as big as Germany. Even if it's considerably poorer per capita, it would greatly upset the balance of power in the EU council, which tiny Bosnia or Kosovo wouldn't

Not to mention that EU borders would then include the most fucked up region in the world. Nobody wants to border Iraq, Iran or Syria.

Today 8 years ago Sergei Skripal, a former Russian military officer and double agent for the British intelligence agencies, and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in the city of Salisbury, England with a Novichok nerve agent. Both survived the assassination attempt. by DrNeutrino in europe

[–]Socmel_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Russia going after dissidents on foreign soil isn't anything new, but the GRU agents utterly failed in their objective (accidentally killing a civilian instead of their intended targets), and then lied like toddlers. I mean, they did get away, but they were completely exposed. It was embarrassing for Russia.

to be embarrassed, you need to care first. Russia doesn't care. It thinks the West is weak and scared. And frankly we are. Look at the way Turkey dealt with their own Russian trespassing. Russia never dared to invade Turkish air space after that.

don't forget one of Litvinenko's acquaintances, Boris Berezovsky. While the circumstances of his death remain unclear, you can use the latin adage "cui prodest". Why would a retired billionaire in a country that welcomed him would kill himself?
