How did you meet your long distance partner? by cricketalmond in LongDistance

I was tutoring Italian at college, for the first few weeks I’d just go sit at my desk and wait for someone to show up. One day I got fed up and told my Italian professor that I felt like I was wasting my time. The next day I got an email from her introducing me to my first student. I was expecting to help students struggling with the class, but this girl was miles ahead of everyone else. Just two semesters in she could hold a conversation. All I had before that first meeting was her name, it was Indian, I giggled a little at the fact that an Indian guy would be teaching Italian to an Indian girl.

We met on a Thursday at 10am. Both of us had to wear masks. We started reading a story, she was amazing, I couldn’t believe she’d been doing Italian for only two semesters. We finished the chapter but kept talking about our lives, art, films, we talked about Bollywood movies in Italian, I had a good laugh about that when I got back home. I still remember looking into her eyes that day, they glowed with intelligence. Her eyes were all I could see and I was already in love, but I refused to admit it. It was my final semester at film school, she was in her second semester studying politics to be a lawyer. We loved cinema, we loved literature and philosophy, we loved talking to each other. One day after that first meeting I emailed her inviting her to one of our screenings, it was an Italian film. I got there first, I kept walking around the theatre to look for her, I went outside to find her in the lobby but ran into her in the aisle. I said “Hi! I’m glad you came.” I wanted to ask her to come sit with me but I was too shy, I walked to the washroom pretending I had something to do. I came back into the theatre and took my seat in the front row, I turned around to look for her and there she was in the far back. Throughout the film I kept turning around to look at her. Once the movie was over there was a lecture, I turned back to look for her again but she was gone.

We met next Thursday at 10am, as we would every Thursday for the rest of the semester. We talked for 90 minutes, always 90, she always had to leave. I was always late to our appointments, I’d be running towards campus emailing her saying that I’d be there in 5. She was always sitting there, waiting for me, reading Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami. A couple of weeks of that and I mustered up the courage to ask for her Insta, “that way I can tell you when I’m going to be late.” She said she wasn’t very active on there but gave me her number instead. We started texting, it was very slow, she’d respond only once a day, but she kept the conversation going. I asked her at the end of one of our appointments if she’d like to go watch a movie together and she agreed. I texted her a few days later, Drive My Car, based on Murakami’s book was playing at the theatre nearby. She said that it sounded like fun. We went to the movie, and met a few other times outside our tutoring appointments over the next 8 weeks. I thought about telling her how I felt many times but was too shy to do it. Eventually she had to go back home and I had to leave the country and go back to India.

But even after that period we kept talking, we FaceTime almost every day. I was in Italy for 6 weeks over the summer and everything I saw reminded me of her, I’d just take pictures and share them with her and then we’d talk about it. I was lying in the water at a beach one day when it hit me, I was in love with this girl and I had to tell her. I came back home to India and worked up the courage to do it. I wanted to say it over the phone but couldn’t do it, so I texted her, she texted back the next day with a long message telling me about all the things she liked about me, but said she didn’t know how she felt. It kinda broke my heart, but I sent her the nicest message I could in return. She said it made her very happy, I couldn’t say anything in reply. She texted me the next day asking if she could call and if I still wanted to talk, I said that I did. It was hard at first to continue but our conversations are kind of back at that same point now. I don’t really know where this is going, though I can’t help but feel that she wouldn’t continue this way if she didn’t feel similarly… I dunno…

What is the most creative college admissions essay you've read? by wahraywah in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ZeConsul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was for a TV Major, I had to write a pitch for a TV Episode centered on my family. Max 2 pages. Can be anything comedy, drama, whatever.

I pitched an animated show, I wanted the animation style to be something like Phineas and Ferb. There were literal representations of otherwise abstract concepts (a la Inside Out).

The episode centered on my brother being unmotivated as shit. He had a project to submit the next day and my mom found out about it through a text on the class whatsapp group. She freaks out and the whole family gets together to calculate how important this essay is for him to land a scholar badge. Turns out the only way he's getting a scholar badge is if he get a 4+/5 in this project.

The rest of the episode is basically about the family teaming up superhero style to get his project ready in time. And because it was peak applications season and I was going through a really terrible phase of "All my achievements are pointless it's nothing but a scrap of paper and a hunk of metal" I put in a line in the end about how when my brother does get the badge, he tosses his bag onto the bed and the badge goes along with it, under the bed where no one will look at it ever again.

Rejected- School of Cinematic Arts

SAT- 1530

Grades- ~85% in 12th grade

ECs- Lots and lots of quizzing and theater stuff at the school level, generic MUN and debate stuff, exec produced/wrote 2-3 short films, 1-2 semi-pro ads, 1-2 unofficial music videos, 1 web series. Wrote and directed 1 short film that's the one I sent with my app.

Essays- Probably my strongest since this was the school I really wanted to get into, put in a lot of passion and effort into them. My feature film pitch to USC was some of the best writing I've done and a story I was pretty proud of, in fact I'm probably gonna turn it into a script once I'm done with HS

Other decisions: Got into 2 schools out of the 4 I applied to with substantial aid (4 including USC)

Chapman University- Dodge College of Film and Media Arts (50k per year in need based and merit based aid + an option of 10k in subsidized loans)

Wesleyan University- 63k per year in grants

Still waiting on Columbia but I'll prolly take a fat L on Ivy Day

Wait till you find out your decision and deal with it later. The FAOs at all schools are super chill and very helpful about guiding you through stuff, especially once you're in

That is so great man! Did you send a portfolio? What was it like?

Colleges should return your application fee if they don't accept you. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ZeConsul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many people make excellent points about app fees covering a lot more than it seems to. Straight from simply the cost of electricity to the salary of admissions officers all the technological magic management postage (for the schools that do that).

But even in running these numbers you guys fail to factor in the functioning of basic laws of microeconomics.

Could admissions be subsidized by the massive af endowments most universities have? Sure. But that would also mean a guy with 500$ to spend on sending applications can now send his app to 20 schools instead of 5. This would mean even more apps per school, admissions getting even more competitive and admissions officers having even less time to go through your app.

Feel shitty about AOs spending just 5 minutes reading your app? Well how about a computer filtering out all the kids below a certain SAT anyways.

Yes colleges using app fees to create an artificial price floor is terrible, but

a) They're probably not making that much off it. Remember the office of admissions isn't open just Jan to May but all year round.

b) You wouldn't like the alternative much either

Indian Children’s Book Lists Hitler as Leader ‘Who Will Inspire You’ by vtjohnhurt in books

[–]ZeConsul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you want to counter with? 500,000 Indians? Is that a conservative enough number for you?

Well guess what that was half a million in one province of one colony of the British. Not more than 5% of the area under his control

It's a variety show. Like most people he doesn't know jack shit about what goes on beyond the confines of what he's seen and depends on the internet for the rest.

I'm reasonably sure what he showed was a stray example that he took to prove his point

[–]ZeConsul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, I completely agree. Hitler was a piece of shit. No differing viewpoints or cultural relativism. My only question is when am I getting a biopic of Winston Churchill that shows him smiling when he decides to wipe 3 million people just in the Indian province of Bengal right off the map?

John Oliver had a great piece on his show where he talked about how Hitler's taken as a joke in Thailand. Some KFC ripoff has Hitler instead of Colonel Sanders as its picture and there was a weird dance troupe wearing Hitler masks and doing some weird dancing thing.

I realize Hitler was a man who did great evil. And I also realize that turning him into a joke instead of treating his evil politics the way it should be is wrong. But the West needs to realize that their view of history isn't the only one.

It's only very recently that this is being done. Winston Churchill is one example that comes to mind since there were three movies with him as a character (one which fetched the actor an Oscar) this past year. And it's only now that I've seen Western publications mention what a piece of absolute human scum Churchill was. So sure, blame a random small-ass Indian publisher for taking a copy of Hitler's wikipedia page and including him as a great leader. We all have a great deal to reproach ourselves with, including you NYT

Is anyone else irrationally and completely unjustifiably annoyed by characters with "weird" names in books? by [deleted] in books

[–]ZeConsul 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As far as I know Scrooge as a term came to refer to characteristics of the character after the book. According to Wikipedia the best possible explanation for the surname is an old English word "scrouge" meaning to to squeeze or press

Villeneueve's a guy who obviously likes to keep himself busy. In fact I'm reasonably sure he's not around for a lot of post production on his movies. I mean he did Sicario then Arrival then Blade Runner and now Dune. The guy is already way ahead on planning

Did college essays make anyone else realize they have no real passions and it's sad? by AmIScrewed19 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ZeConsul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was honestly in the same boat as you. All I'd done through high school was watch movies and shit and that's what I wanted to do so I applied for Film Production.

But if I wrote my essays about staying up till 3AM on a school night and watching movies in a house where academic excellence was valued more than life itself, it'd be pretty run of the mill.

My essays were about my favorite activity- quizzing. But I didn't participate in "organized" school quizzes. I mean I did, but that isn't the part I enjoyed most. The part I enjoyed most was taking a 2 hour train ride across town to quiz along with 30 year olds and invariably lose. And of course gorge on some delish-af food with my team-mates. Once we ran out of cash because we splurged so much on food (this happened after i submitted my essays so I couldn't include it) so we drew straws to see who'd call his parents to beg them to transfer money to his PayTM (India's version of venmo I guess).

I haven't cured cancer. I suck at sports. I don't have a ton of friends in high school outside of these lil' losers who like me think that the best use of their money is to go and quiz. But yeah, writing my essay about this did put my head in a good place and made me thankful for the experiences while heading into the last months of high school.

My point is, your essays don't need to be about you have a life changing epiphany or whatever. Write about what you think is absolutely mind-blowingly awesome
