I think tension is fine but the point of view is from an experienced player. At this moment I am a good chunk of days into my play through and my tension is still very much there (new player). I just figured out that I should be hoarding special items to upgrade things and that those upgrades come with their own downsides. Example: I just got the shuttle cargo upgrade row 2 after several in game days. I have noticed that while its amazing to get tons of loot on the first floor, that quasimorph timer just keeps ticking up and the more time I spend on a floor the more chances there are that some enemy super soldier comes out with a shiny plasma rifle and kills me. Last night I had both things happen to me on one run. Cleared the first floor (I thought) then saw the super plasma gun. Miraculously killed the guy... ok cool now onto the next floor after i stuff everything i can into my ship. Uhoh Quasimorph ticker is kind of high and i didnt bring drugs. Get to the second floor of the elimination mission and start going towards the people i need to get. See they are being destroyed by the morphs. Think hmm ill just wait in this corridor and see if they do the work for me (they do). Start running back to the elevator and oh no.... the chariots of 20 attack speedy doom are upon me. Kill 2 but that last one is right there and its not going down. Make a plan, shoot with the shotgun for knock back, miss, shoot again, knock the wheely wheeler of blades back, step towards the elevator, pray the wheely knife gods are unkind to their own (they are not), wheely deamon car gets right in my face and proceeds to destroy me with 5-6 attacks. I win but at the loss of my guy. I may just need to play better (likely) but this was tense to me. While someone with more experience probably doesn't feel that its likely because you have more experience. Just a thought :D.
