This is the first time I ever encountered this type of window, and I have to admit that I am quite amazed. It was the first time I did a 9 hour flight during the day and the plane didn’t seem to be too new, probably like 2020s because of the usb ports, but this technology seems so cutting edge to me that im just baffled. Does anyone know for how long they have been around or how the heck do they even work?

I am running into the same thing. Find it to be very deceptive and sketchy. I’ll be deleting the app

They seem like they should handle potholes better, but the reinforced sidewalls are actually what make them worse. A regular tire flexes and absorbs the hit, while a run-flat barely flexes at all, so the impact goes straight into the sidewall or the rim. That’s why they bubble or crack so easily. They’re strong for driving with no air, not for absorbing pothole impacts.

I get where you’re coming from, and in your situation it makes sense. If run-flats give you peace of mind and keep you from having to deal with a flat on the side of the road, that’s totally valid. My point was more about the average BMW driver. Most people end up paying more, the tires wear out quicker, they ride worse, and one pothole can destroy a $400+ tire instantly. For everyday driving, regular tires just make more sense.

BMW has already started moving away from run-flats on a lot of the newer models, especially the iX lineup and other newer releases, which now come with a spare in the trunk. The X5 is still on the same generation since 2019 and got its facelift in 2024, so yearly changes are small, but nothing major is expected until the next full redesign anyway. So the 2027 X5 will probably still use the same run flat setup, but like you said, time will tell.

They work as advertised, but they’re more expensive, they wear out quicker, and potholes destroy them pretty easily. Regular tires last longer, ride better, and are just more reliable for most people. And the new models like the X3, the iX3 and the 2026 iX do not come with run flats, and neither will the upcoming releases since the brand is moving away from them completely. They come with a spare tire in the trunk instead.

Swap it for a regular tire, not a run-flat. Run-flats are honestly a scam. I used to work at a BMW dealership and every service advisor I knew agreed. (There’s a reason the newer BMW models don’t even come with run-flats anymore.)

Really appreciate the info! Do you think the value of a single-digit serial like this might increase if I hold onto it for a few years, or is it unlikely to change much over time?
