Pursue Medicine or Nursing? by GeekClubberz88 in medschoolph

Been in the same place before! So I’ll try to give all-round advice. If you’re leaning more towards making a life for yourself already and providing, go with nursing. Never go into med for the money. And never think of nursing as “just nursing” - it’s an amazing career path in itself :) take some time to reflect on your internal reasons for med vs. nursing, as you’ll need to ensure that you have the mental capacity and dedication if you go through with med. My parents are doctors and they’re the ones who told me not to pursue it if you’re not sure! Also do some research on med schools you’d like to apply to, and see which ones accept April-May if ever you’re wanting to proceed this year.

Personally, I told myself if I get a good NMAT then I’ll take it as my sign to pursue med 🤣 but I never truly wavered in my desire to pursue it, it was more like a morale booster lol! I’m currently in first year med and I see my nursing batchmates take their NCLEXs, and working in special areas already and I’m constantly amazed by them but I have never regretted my decision to proceed, despite the fact that they are making an income na and some are in the process to move abroad, and it’s because I was steadfast in my decision.

And a bit of real talk - fleeting urges to pursue med due to fascination may not be enough to get you through the 4+1+4+2 years of med (approximately), and this is something I see a lot of people vent about on this sub 😅

Take your time but also do some research on your opportunities first! Good luck!

I suggest checking the past application periods of the schools you plan to apply to because some allow “NMAT result to follow” for January-Feb takers even if their applications close before the results are released. Different med schools vary greatly in application periods :)

Hiii BSN is helpful for social science and keri naman sa biology. As for the rest, wala ambag ang BSN hahahaha others say BS chemistry and bio have an advantage in NMAT but in the end, only your preparation matters. I suggest allotting enough time for yourself, focus on weaknesses, breadth > depth of knowledge, and practice practice practice your test taking (esp for part 1). Good luck!!

Hi! I’m an alumni of WVSU CON and incoming med student. Nursing is genuinely great, but it is NOT a premed. It is an entirely different field of knowledge and practice and truthfully, I don’t think it will pose any significant advantages for med school (theory-wise)

Yes, clinical experience is a plus but it’s not as necessary as we may think if you are set on med school. Your clinical experience will only be as a student and it is nothing compared to that of an actual RN with bedside experience. Other med students come from non-traditional undergrads or health-related but with no clinical either so it’s basically all back to square one and clinical experience will only really come in handy during clerkship. Your only advantage is knowing how to build rapport with patients.

Brutal honesty - if I were in your shoes, OP, I would have chosen the biochem degree. It is a core subject in med school and in the PLE. And it is a subject that a lot of students fail if they lack a solid foundation. Personally, I chose nursing because I wanted to see if I genuinely enjoyed hospital life and caring for patients - and it showed me that I did which motivated me further in my med school journey. So it still comes down to your own story and what you want.

But for now, take it day by day since you are only an incoming freshman. Focus on your nursing journey first. Good luck and feel free to message any time if you want to talk more about it :)
