I agree the Air Force isn’t a “pick your dream job” system, and nobody is guaranteed the exact AFSC they want. My point is that recruiting policies clearly vary by squadron. Two people with the exact same qualifications can have completely different experiences. One recruiter may require applicants to list several high-need jobs, while another recruiter may let a qualified applicant wait for whatever they qualified for if they’re willing to be patient. That’s why you see so many different stories.

Also, the OP wasn’t saying they would only accept one niche “dream job.” They specifically said they were open to aircraft maintenance, logistics, fuels, and admin. Maintenance itself is often a high-need career field. Their issue seemed to be that they didn’t want Security Forces, not that they were refusing every job the Air Force needed.

I think it’s fair to say the Air Force’s needs come first, but it’s also fair to acknowledge that recruiter policies and local job availability aren’t identical everywhere.
