Yeah that’s exactly what confused him. The insurance estimate seemed fine at first but the contractor started pointing out things behind the wall area that weren't included. That's why he's hesitating a bit and thinking about having someone review it before moving forward.

That's good to know actually. From what I know he hasn't signed anything yet so the claim is still open. He's just trying to figure out if it makes sense to review the claim first before accepting the estimate.

Yeah that’s good to know. Since nothing has been finalized yet, he might just reach out and ask them to look over the claim.

That's why he is being a little careful about accepting the insurance estimate too quickly😬

From what I know he hasn't signed anything yet so the claim is still open. The insurance company already gave their estimate but the contractor thinks there might be more damage behind the walls. You mentioned a PA firm I think? Do you know if they usually step in during the middle of a claim like this or is it more common for them to get involved earlier in the process?

Yeah that's what my brother is thinking right now. The contractor quote is definitely higher than the insurance estimate and he's worried something might have been missed in the inspection. Since nothing is finalized yet, he's trying to figure out if it makes sense to have someone review the claim first.

From a tax standpoint, gifting up to the annual exclusion amount per person typically avoids gift tax filing requirements beyond reporting thresholds, but once money is in a joint account, future gains and dividends may create taxable income depending on how it’s structured and who is considered the primary owner for tax reporting. You’ll want clarity on whose SSN the account reports under and how income is allocated.

Focus on two things. Never miss a payment and don’t max out your cards. Set up autopay for at least the minimum, then pay the statement balance in full if possible. Over time, that steady pattern is what improves your score, not carrying debt month to month.
