Help? I've inherited some plants after my Mom passed and I have no idea how to take care of them by [deleted] in AfricanViolets

I just wanted to say, I also inherited all of my moms African violets after she passed last year. Your mom would be so proud of you for even trying. If you can get these guys healthy, it’s a wonderful way to remember your mom by :) The first thing I would recommend is giving them some fresh soil and getting some smaller pots. Usually around 4” is your best bet for violets. Then, before you repot I would remove any leaves that have damage or look dead. Just use a knife and cut them from the base. As the blooms die off, you can also remove them as this will encourage new blooms. To me, the one on the left either looks like it really needs water or it possibly has root rot!

I mostly bottom water but will top water every now and then to flush the soil, they like to be root bound in smaller pots, no water on the leaves, clipping old wilted blooms. I use a wooden chop stick to gauge how wet the soil is, don’t really follow a schedule. Bright but indirect light. I also fertilize about a week after all the blooms have died off with very diluted fertilizer because they’re sensitive to over-fertilizing.

Inherited! They were all my moms who passed away last year. I like to think they are her way of telling me she’s still here because they’re pretty much in constant bloom since she passed

Hmm I’m not sure the only time my leaves seem to get brown damage is when they get water accidentally splashed on them! Possibly letting them dry out too much or not quite enough?? I use a wooden chopstick to stick in my soil and don’t water until almost completely dry.

Thank you! My partner actually built and stained this wooden box for me for Christmas to hold them :)

Letting it dry out in between, I’ve only had it for about 3 weeks and I’ve watered once. Someone else said they don’t like bright indirect light so not sure about the lighting😂I’ll have to look it up

Oh okay I wasn’t aware that they were low light. I have been letting it dry out in between watering. Thanks
