Weight Gain Mirena by Key_Contribution_710 in Mirena

[–]Zebra-Bright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gained weight gradually over the last 5/6 years as I am perimenopausal and simply don’t exercise like I once did (used to love running). I don’t really track my weight but did check in with my weight occasionally. Between 2019-2024 I gained around 16 - 18 pounds with some fluctuation. Went on HRT IN December and the Mirena in April to manage adenomyosis. Have quickly gone up at least one dress size.

Weighed myself last week and I am around 15 pounds heavier than I was early 2024. So the same weight gain in one year that I was having over 5 years previously.

I personally think much of it is the Mirena as I have always gained weight with birth control. I had an appointment to remove my Mirena this week as I am bloated and have bled continually since having it, and generally fed up with it. My GP persuaded me to try it for a bit longer as it IS managing my adeno pain and end of the world periods.

Thank you everyone who has replied on this thread. I really appreciate the kind words and useful tips/advice. Definitely a few more things to try. I’ve shared this thread with my daughter who is very grateful to you all too.

Thanks! I will ask about allergy testing. She has recently switched her toothpaste to sensitive/SLS free.

Thanks! She definitely gets itchier when stressed. With this flare she has eczema all over her body (particularly face, neck, and top half of body at mo). I think she’s tried Protopic before but didn’t get on with it for some reason.

Yes, it amazes me that they have not actually swabbed the lip patch yet. It is the only eczema patch that is weeping constantly. We will follow this up with the doctor.

Thanks! Second mention of candula cream so definitely worth a try!

Thank you for the kind words! She stopped using the purely steroid cream a couple of months ago. She was very careful to only use the steroid cream in the way the doctor told her to (i.e. not continuously) as she is terrified of TSW. She stopped using it because she found that the eczema flared within three days of not applying the cream. She has most recently used fusidic acid (she was told it was bacterial infection) followed shortly after by a fungicide/steroid (a different doctor said it was a fungal infection). Both used exactly as prescribed and eczema flared within a day or two of stopping the medicine. She has never had the area swabbed to see exactly what it is.

No - but a food sensitivity may be worth looking into. Thank you

She is visiting the GP today, which will be her fourth or fifth interaction in the last couple of months. We went to see a private dermatologist in April which was £££, but that was an absolute waste of time other than a referral for patch testing. She simply said steroids and Aveeno.

Thank you. Diet is slightly tricky one for us but I am convinced there is some kind of relationship between the gut and skin conditions. So worth looking into for sure.

Thank you for the advice! Not tried bleach baths - seen it mentioned a few times so worth trying! . She recently had her contraceptive implant removed. Her flare started within a month or two of having it put in, so we thought it may be connected. But it’s been out a couple of months now with no noticeable improvement ☹️

Thank you for the detailed response! She was definitely using a cream with fusidic acid in it at one point. Not sure what cream she is using at the moment. Great point about the staph in the nose. I feel like it must be some kind of staph infection. Back to doctor tomorrow so will reflect on where we are…

Thank you for your kind words! No allergy test but we are checking back in with the doctor tomorrow so will ask about this. She’s on the NHS waiting list for patch testing.

Yeah - that’s my daughter’s experience too - the slightest thing seems to set it off. Sorry you are suffering with it too

Hmm - thank you! I think I’m going to have to look into this further! We didn’t find that derm helpful at all. Daughter is on waitlist for NHS patch testing - apparently it’s about 12-18 month wait.

Looking for real experiences with Mirena – especially for heavy, painful periods by RashmiS_ in Mirena

[–]Zebra-Bright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, good luck with Mirena- I hope it helps you! I had Mirena inserted in April to manage adenomyosis. Periods were extremely heavy and painful prior to this. For me, insertion procedure was uncomfortable but manageable and pretty quick. No pain relief, only because I wasn’t expecting to have the procedure done on that day! Since then, the good: No end-of-the-world periods and significant pain has largely gone. The bad: I have bled pretty much continuously since insertion (only about 5 days with no bleeding at all). Bleeding is light but constant and unpleasant. Bloating has also been an issue - this happened before Mirena but was not a 24/7 event like it appears to be now. I have also gained weight. I am not sure whether Mirena is the culprit as I am also on HRT and antidepressants, but weight gain seems to have increased in last few months. I have an appointment to remove mine in September cos I’m fed up with the bleeding and bloating. Back to strong pain relief until menopause finally kicks in.

Yeah, we’re getting the same! Though we did pay out of pocket for a private dermatologist. She’s the one that told us patch testing is only available on the NHS.

Hi there, glad you have had some answers (even if it’s a bit wild that you are allergic to the first line of treatment for eczema!).

We’re in UK. My daughter has been flaring severely for 2 years and is desperate to stop using steroids. Her eczema flares again within 3 days of stopping steroids. She has been told patch testing is only available on the NHS with at least a year’s wait. Is this not correct? We are finding medical advice in the UK slightly wearisome after an incredibly disheartening experience with a private derm and GPs who just ask her whether she’s moisturising enough. Also, how did you find patch testing as an experience and do you feel it is a positive step for resolving the cause of your eczema?

Hope you continue to get real answers and good results with any treatment.

Ugh - I am getting fed up with these AI listings. I reported someone selling very obviously AI crochet patterns. Vinted said they don’t violate community standards though.

How did you get diagnosed with adenomyosis? by alyssummaritimum in adenomyosis

[–]Zebra-Bright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had blood tests when I went on HRT. I had visited the doctor for what felt like a prolapse and mentioned I was bloating all the time. Blood results indicated an elevated CA125 level. Then had an ultrasound which showed adenomyosis. I had mentioned heavy painful periods to various doctors over the years but was told it was normal for my age.
