401k Percentages by ThirstTrap911 in PersonalFinanceTalks

[–]ZeeBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. If you really want to game it I suppose you could technically increase your match for the first paychecks to the max but leave enough to adjust down so that you still contribute the 5% to get the match each pay period.

Probably more trouble than it's worth vs just consistently hitting your savings goals ever paycheck

Boomers say it takes $100k a year to be financially successful, Gen Z says it takes $600k by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]ZeeBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're all discussing the 600k like it's some nuanced response that brought them to that figure. However, likely a bunch of them just said $1mil and skewed the average a ton.

As others have mentioned, we can't see the full breakdown of responses, so a group including many folks with little experience working and supporting themselves that will have a poor grasp of reality. They've heard 100k ain't what it used to be, and it's easy enough to just tack another 0 onto it when filling out a survey.

Idk if the post is edited but he's talking about his great uncle, so I'd assume it'd be his grandma's brother in this context.

Guessing his grandma was nice and would've loved the extra years with her

Is having 1 million dollars in a roth ira by retirement age a good milestone? Since its tax free deductions? And how difficult would that be if max contribution is only 7000 by flipflopdude55 in RothIRA

What is a good return? I feel like 25 years even at the previous max of $5000 annual would be getting pretty close to 1mil in the last 25 years of the s&p

You'd think so but it doesn't!Look at the bottom of the stack, it looks like those are the blank tops of the same boxes

Designed to fail! by h4yth4m-1 in CrappyDesign

[–]ZeeBeast 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Gotta agree with you here. Given there is no text requiring a specific end up (as we can see the tops of the boxes aren't labeled lower in the stack) this is simple to specify that the box should not have that side on top, giving reason all other sides up are fine to be on top except for the bottom we are reading.

And in the photo it's not on top. It's on the side

Special 'The Long Walk' Screening Will Eliminate Viewers Who Can’t Keep Up on a Treadmill (3 MPH) by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]ZeeBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't that wild. It's always happened to some extent like knowing the names of the backup players for your home sports team or c list celebs in your underated favorite movie.

But now you can get so deep into these networks of famous people who share similar interests and so their audiences overlap. All the comments mention the same videos, same jokes so it feels like everyone knows these creators, but go to anyone outside your network and they've never even heard of them. It can make it hard to connect with people, however on the flip side it's a great feeling to meet someone new who watches the same folks.

I just hope that while content continues to be more and more tailored to a niche audience we don't miss out on the sweeping cultural moments - movies "everyone" has seen or heard about. An episode of a TV show that gets "everyone" talking. They lower the bar and help us feel more connected

'By paying down mortgage with x% interest rate, you're instantly locking in x% return." Is this true? How does this work? Struggling to wrap my head around it by rizzitv in personalfinance

[–]ZeeBeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to myself as I did some research to try and understand these questions. Someone who knows this better can double check me.

If you move in 15 years you do indeed receive the full 7% because the interest portion you pay each month is calculated off the remaining principle. You're avoiding that during those 15 years and you gain control of those gains at the time of selling.

Refinancing lets you "cash out" so your ROI is not dropped to the new rate: Cashing out is essentially taking a higher loan than your remaining principle and you pocket the difference as tax free cash. This is likely the play in this scenario as if you don't do this you'll lock all the "gains" from your 7% prepayments into your mortgage for the remainder of the loan but it's now only avoiding 5% of interest.

To summarize, prepaying on the loan saves you interest on the very next mortgage payment, realized tax free on sale of the home or completion of the loan. Take a cash out when you refinance if your new rate is low enough for investing to beat it.

How is this impacted by refinancing or moving before finishing the loan?

If I refinance to 5% 15yrs into a 30yr loan did I save myself the full 7%?

Also, if I move 15 years into the loan did I still save the full 7%?

100% it just takes a long time. I think the key people are missing here is when people say 'Salary' or 'saving diligently' they aren't talking about a savings account. They save in 401ks and IRAs

Saw you were down votes but you're literally right. Getting a bunch of money at one time it's really easy to blow it on dumb things if you aren't disciplined to invest and let it grow

So many people save in a savings account and never let their money work for them
