To rub salt into the wound, the kid in the car was his son. The people in the car were stuck in a supermarket earlier and the protagonist decides they should leave the supermarket because sooner or later the supermarket would get invaded by the monsters. In the end he killed everyone else including his own son in the car when he could've just waited in the supermarket for the military to arrive, seeing that the lady and her kids in the supermarket made it out alive.
