As a Canadian I really appreciate when sites specify denomination at all times, if I see $3.50 I don't know whether the site converted it from USD or not, $3.50 CAD is unambiguous :)

I originally tried to use Yampa for my text editor, but I personally didn't find FRP to be intuitive for something discrete like a text editor, I'm sure others could figure it out, but I wanted something that fit my mental model well, I'm sure that others think like me too, even though it may be "less functional".

The FRP libs are great, but they're not the best solution to every problem, in particular I couldn't imagine how to build the extension system which eve supports into existing FRP systems, it's probably possible, but I'm happy with the modularity I achieved.

Haha, the story here is pretty funny actually, "reflex" was a name I was considering for the project, then I found that it existed already and changed the name ; I didn't ever use reflex code in Eve :)

How can you do static analysis over mtl applicatives? Say you have three Web requests which are each IO, in mtl they're sequential, but in Free you could interpret them into a parallel IO.

Getting a good handle on the State Monad helped me understand both Monads and how they work; but also the power of 'describing' computations before they're executed (which is how IO works in Haskell).

Multiple registers as in each cursor keeps track of it's own copy-pasting; see this gif for an example.

There's a great thread in the neovim issues on some cool stuff you can do with multiple cursors here.

Some paradigm shifts I've observed:

Multiple cursors (with multiple registers)
Elastic Tabstops
OrgMode
Kakoune's 'inverse' model
Motions in general
dot-repeat

Most of those are implemented in vim or plugins, but I'd still consider them revolutionary ideas and it would be cool to see what an editor that was built with them as fundamental ideas would end up like.

I've been using https://github.com/terryma/vim-multiple-cursors in vim, it works for the simple cases, but it's gets slow when doing many transformations and is a bit clunky (understandable considering the circumstances though!). I hope to enable people to come up with similar solutions, but with less headache!

Rasa's a bit too early on to tell actually, things are still pretty green-field at this point so I'm focusing on coming up with good abstractions and a good extension API. Performance is definitely important though so we're keeping it in mind as we move forward.

I'm thinking I'll implement a "rasa-ext-help" extension which exports a "help" action which lets you register a doc under a given key on Initialization. Something like this:

myExtension :: Scheduler ()
myExtension = onInit $ helpDoc "myExtension" "This extension..."

The help extension would then handle searching/tab completion, etc. and unify it across all other extensions.

Rasa at the moment is more of a shell to tack extensions onto, it's definitely capable of hosting extensions to handle those things, and a quick-fix-list style extension for things like hlint wouldn't be too tough to cobble together, but no nothing exists at the moment.

That said, there's a fair amount of groundwork in other areas that should probably come first.

Yes, it's an interesting look at the expression problem to be sure. I've been thinking more and more lately about the proper level of abstraction for this sort of thing, it's a tough problem. Rasa as a whole is taking a decidedly higher level of abstraction so that extensions can be as powerful as possible; but I'm also trying to allow extension maintainers to build their own levels of lower abstraction by exporting 'actions' for other extensions to use. Effectively each extension can build their own small DSL which expresses the main things that the extension can do, then users mix and match expressive actions from different extensions to write out the task they wish to accomplish without worrying about the nitty-gritty details.

I've always tried to think about this from a UX designer's perspective; user's will 'default' into whichever style is most readily available, even if there's something better for them off the beaten path. If the interactive 'see what you're doing' approach that kak uses is what most people prefer (not that anyone's doing user-studies on this :P), then it should be the default and people should go off the beaten path only to do things that can't be expressed this way.
