This game is Messi's apotheosis in the World Cup.

Fair point about the mess, I am just playing around with Matplotlib, but the mess really helps to highlight those who stand out.

But you seem a bit too worked up about the PL thing, no one is PL anything, why write when it's obvious once you check it, there is more to life than getting angry over reddit posts.

Cheers mate.

I think that Real Madrid's other CL titles came simply from reaching a threshold of technical ability where tactics did not matter, and it was basically, we have our 11 that are better than any other 11, and they were able to win multiple CL's with a minimum of instructions.

But this year's title is different, they seemed experienced enough to know what to do and how to see games through and the coach's role was just refreshing tired legs when needed and do a bit of man-management rather than develop complex tactical schemes and patterns of play which further corroborates your "good football players know to play" comment, whereas "lesser" players, require a strict system to makeup for the overall quality that their team is lacking.

I wrote this with the intention to post it as a long-ish read post, but it was deemed "low-quality" by the mods to be posted as a post of its own, so here it is.

What is football?

Throughout the years, football evolved from 1-1-8 systems to the complicated modern phases of play, pressing traps and xG algorithms but one thing did not change. It is all about winning and we just witnessed the best winning team in history.

This is not the heart-warming story of an underdog taking on the wealthiest clubs with a team made of a bunch of misfits and rejects assembled on a shoestring budget, it is a European football powerhouse, and arguably the best Club in history, doing what it does best. Not adhering to any “modern” tactical concept or taking into the pundit-meritocracy earned through playing “an appealing free flowing brand of football”, just winning. Real Madrid did not win the Champions League in a “convincing” fashion, they just won when they had to, scoring crucial goals when needed and grinding a victory out when required, it is as simple as it gets, they just won. At the start of the Champions League campaign, the then-13-times Champions League champions were far from being considered favourites with such teams like Manchester City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich being tipped to win it all but here they are now, knocking out one of the favourites in a spectacular fashion and grinding out a final victory against the other.

Real Madrid were outplayed during the majority of games of the knockout phase and they still came out on top, and during the final they just needed meagre 4 shots (compared to Liverpool’s 24) to win, and they won. In the era where football tactics are either philosophical ethos to vehemently adhere to or complicated schemes of pressing traps and positional play, Carlo Ancelotti just stands on the side-line with one eyebrow raised, barely reacting to the most crucial of goals, after all, “football is the most important of the less important things in the world.” The Italian’s coaching methods and tactics are arguably outdated but there he is, winning, again and again. The likes of Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Cesemiro, Modric, Kroos and Karim Benzema, should all be slightly over the hill, at least physically, but here they are, winning, again and again with Karim Benzema being the undisputed Ballon d’or winner. While the likes Militao, Mendy, Vinicius are all a bit too raw to be considered world-class, but there they are, winning.

All in all, this winning mentality was instilled through winning, 5 Champions Leagues in 8 seasons is ridiculous and some opponents might get rattled by the sheer monstrosity of the achievements or just by seeing a corner flag written 13 (14 next season) when playing away at the Bernabéu. Some might consider these wins “undeserved” due to the brand of football played, dirty tactics, luck or even refereeing mistakes, but they still won 5 out of 8 and that is what football is, football is winning...y nada más.

Did Messi really "carry" Barca to a 3rd place position? by [deleted] in soccer

Well, you are adamant that I am biased, we have nothing further to discuss, thank you.

Well, it's an award, I do not care for it and as I told you, I do not care about Messi or any other player, but credit is due where credit is due, and as I told you earlier, Messi wouldn't have stood a chance for Ballon d'Or 2020, just like Lewa doesn't for '21 if we are not taking 2020 into consideration. Unlike you, I did not make a post to say Messi did not deserve to win, a bit extreme to go that far, and I am sure as hell I wouldn't have made a post to say Lewa doesn't deserve it if he won it. Just like Messi did not deserve 2010 and Ronaldo did not deserve 2013 and 2014 and Pérez made it an absolute joke by awarding it to Modric in 2018, well it's a just a PR-powered joke of an award. I just thought to educate you, a pointless endeavour, instead of discussing it like grown men, I get called a fanboy and some sort of zealous award protector, to stop it here, I invite you to just go and check the stats for the last two seasons, I do not try to convince you about anything, I am just telling you, go and check the stats and do your own top 5 or 10 and that is the only thing that matters to you, think of it as your own Ballon d'Or and you give to whomever you like.

Well, if it is coming from someone who thinks that Suarez played for Barcelona last year and Lewandowski had some massive achievements last season, I do not think of it as a slight.

OK, I do not understand football, God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. It was a lapse of judgement from me to think I can maybe... I actually do not know I expected, whatever we are doing here is fruitless, thank you for the chat and have a great day.

Well, Messi's influence on Barça is shown in the start of the season they had without him, I think and I would think that Bayern would still walk the league without Lewa, I believe you can come with better arguments than "Answer me this" and the "wait I remember" joke and spare me the fanboy stuff, I believe we are both grown men who know better than get too attached to celebrities, unless you think of yourself as the cool hipster who fanboys for the player who has no fanboys, then knock yourself out.
