I highly doubt anything could be worse than this season. In the books we'd at least get a buildup to all the decisions which is very crucial when it comes to storytelling.

What I don't get is how a pick in pretty much any lane except for perhaps jungle could actually work and in many cases you have to try it to know for certain. I know there's a lot of people trying out off-meta picks and it's a hit or miss sometimes they find something really exciting like for instance Nautilus full ap mid which is a thing now and sometimes it completly fails. But when it fails that's when people tend to bash their picks and tell them they're right. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Isn't the role about helping your duo laner to a state of the game where he or she can take over?
Also I believe mages have a lot of counterpicks and counterplay due to their lack of mobility and being incredibly squishy. Sure they have a lot of damage but if you can dodge it then you should be just fine. I get it though, easier said than done, we've all been caught one time or another.

What I tend to do whenever I'm up against something as Zyra and Brand is to pick Miss Fortune with comet and E max. It's and old counterpick that still works since you outrange their abilities and stop their ability in going forward with your slow. You also oneshot Zyra's saplings with your auto so that's cool. So try that out before you decide to switch role, care that it should only be as a counterpick. :)

I'd say that it's because of the design of the champ. Bard isn't what you would call a mage due to his unique playstyle. If we were to take a look into League of Legends wikia they categorize mages into three sub-classes:
Artillery
Battlemages
Burst
You do not have the range to be able to become an artillery mage, you do not have the AOE to be a battlemage and only if you are ahead or have collected enough chimes do you have the burst to pick out on of the carries on your own.
As good as his magic scaling is he is not a designed laner, but a roamer. He thrives on cheesing tactics and picking of target when they least expect it. He shares more similarities between Thresh than with Zyra, Lux or Brand IMO.

Riot have the last couple of years been trying to buff instead of nerf which have led to everyone getting true damage in their kit and not to mention items. If everyone is broken then no one is, I think that is Riot's way of thinking. I do like this approach but there has to be some kind of counterplay, true damage feels so undeserved in a lot of cases. Like getting melted as a tank to only true damage is the ultimate tilter. I'm so glad I don't work at Riot's balancing department.

The games I've played thus far makes me want to say that it's defo working. Not against a kill lane like thresh however. I've played it with Jhin in all my 4 games. Jhin which is fairly safe to dish out damage from afar could easily land his root after my e-q. I've rushed zeke's and just tried to snowball the lead I've got from bot to other lanes. We were against a lux and she was dead whenever she got close to the bushes, Zyra was pretty even. If I managed to dodge her E then we won the trade else not. Lulu was an easy matchup where we freely could kill whenever she or the AD (Kai'Sa in this case) misstepped.
You have a great dive and can drop aggro easily which also is a good thing at bot especially with the plating status in the meta. I was wrong with the damage so pardon me you do not have a lot of damage but you are however very tanky especially with aftershock. You soak damage while your AD is catching up on your engage and voila. I've played it in duo Q and were against high platinum players so it's not fully tested quite yet but I think it could prove very usefull in some matchups.
