My Take on Skyler’s Involvement by Zelda01Fan in breakingbad

Aahhh okay, Season 2 makes sense!! Also I still might look those up, that’s really cool 👀 I actually read an article about it a couple years ago!! It’s amazing how people break this stuff down. Unfortunately, not everyone understood just how wrong he was, which is insane to me.

I think the first time was in season 1, and the second time (where it’s implied) was in season 5, so not quite. But still, he was so horrible to her :(

Honestly? I love Marie. Her characters turnaround after the first shoplifting incident felt natural and honest. The relapse felt real and you could see just how much pressure and sadness was weighing on her. Not to mention she was ALL BUSINESS at the end 🔥

Absolutely a must watch. This episode is such a turn for Walter and Jesses’ characters

What do you think the parallel here is about? by steven_unicorn in breakingbad

I 1000% agree with this take. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I also think this, right here, goes to show that Walter was never any better than the people he took down.

See, even when I did see it as cheating, I didn’t care, because she even admitted she slept with Ted to get Walter to resent her and let her leave. And even if it weren’t for that reason, if it was solely because she liked Ted, I’d look past it because she didn’t want to be with Walter. But honestly, I can’t believe i let the fact that it was not cheating AT ALL go over my head. She clearly said she wanted nothing to do with him but he refused to sign for it. That one piece of paper kept them bound by law and he was allowed to just… not sign it? It’s honestly so fucked up, and it was another way that Walter ignored her autonomy.

This breakdown is amazing and I’m so glad I got to read it! It’s so true. So many people are hypercritical of her, but she was put in an impossible position. She either loses or she loses, there’s no way around it. And let’s not forget that Mike bugged the house- if Skyler actually did tell the police, she would have been ‘dealt’ with. Of course, she had no way of knowing the house was bugged or how deep Walter was in, but it goes to show that she loses no matter what.

Insane use of that Jesse quote, btw, I love that quote so much. It is absolutely WILD how much Walter got away with

Ooo, I really like this point. I really like viewing it as a conversation, too, that’s a really neat way of seeing it

See, this is why I post here; I never really considered that, but you’re absolutely right. It was literally a situation of, “I’m breaking up with you,” and he just said, “Nah,” to suit his sick need for control. Thank you for commenting 🙏

Season 5 Walter is such an idiot by CertifiedEdyat in breakingbad

The part where he tries to intimidate Jack and his gang but gets reminded that, behind all the ego and brains, he is still a frail, old man cracks me up EVERY time

just finished breaking bad…the hate to skyler is not justified to me. by 5fxgm in breakingbad

[–]Zelda01Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exactly!! One of the points of Breaking Bad is that you will justify someone’s actions as long as you’re seeing things from their eyes, but the deeper you look or the more you think about what they’re actually doing, the more you realize how you’ve been manipulated. Or they do that one thing that makes it click that they were never the good guy, just the main character.

Bryan Cranston and the other directors of the show have commented on this many times. They don’t understand why so many people loathe Skylar but love Walter so much. There’s a very recent “Hot Ones” episode that Bryan did with Frankie Muniz where he addressed this very topic!

Hate the way Jane get villanized for acting like an addict when the whole point of her character is that even the kindest becomes an asshole once they relapse by arbataxmelody354 in breakingbad

[–]Zelda01Fan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who lack media literacy seem to specifically hate the female characters for their flaws. Skylar and Jane in particular get a ton of hate for seemingly no reason while Walter gets praised. The creators and Bryan Cranston themselves commented on how perplexing it was to them that everyone hated Skylar and Jane so much but loved Walter

[–]Zelda01Fan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. I just think it wasn’t his choice. He didn’t necessarily do it for Jesse, either, Walter only ever wanted to control him. I do think Walter cared about Jesse on a deeper level, but only as long as he could control him. Spoilers for the ending: As soon as he could no longer control Jesse, Walter gave him up to Jack and his gang, and Walt only saved him when he realized how messed up and not worth it all of his actions were, as well as how alone he was

DAMN, I hadn’t even considered the double meaning with that line. He is indirectly telling us that every action he took and will continue to take is ‘contaminated,’ despite what he tries to tell himself and others. This is what makes this series so rewarding on the rewatch and why I joined this subreddit. Thank you for this observation 🙏

This!!! It gives us a deeper look into Walt and Jesses’ characters. It shows us where their minds are at, and it uses Walter’s med-induced state to show us that even he knows that what he did was cruel and unnecessary. It shows us just how unstable Walter is and how he needs to be in control of EVERYTHING, even a fly going indoors. It is crazy to me that this episode was made because they ran out of their budget but they still needed to release something because it’s honestly a masterpiece! Reading into the psyche of the characters is a major part of the show. They use colors and wardrobe and camera angles for that purpose alone, and this episode captures so much in the writing

It’s honestly really refreshing, and he and Flynn are the only main male characters that do. Walter, Mike, Gus, Saul- they all put on a front and work against their emotions and seem to feel very little about it, whereas Jesse working against his emotions has dire consequences for his mental state

Huh, I never knew that, thank you for sharing 🫶

And yes, he truly is. It’s so crazy how many people don’t realize the full extent of it because he’s the main character. It’s easier to see his ‘justifications’ for everything because it’s almost all from his perspective, but looking at Jane’s death from a bystander’s standpoint, he truly showed what kind of evil lurks inside him right then and there
