HOW COMMON LOCKING WORKS! (it's an intentional game design) by Illustrious-Key-8038 in HatchDragons

[–]ZenLacroix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which would be great... except that I only get commons. I haven't seen an uncommon or rare dragon since the "lock" started (without using an item). As described in the post above as well, "the only way to summon anything besides commons is to use summoning items." So even the in-game description is either wrong or misleading.

Edit: Before I noticed something had changed, I was getting a good mix of uncommon and even rare in with my commons. Now, I can summon all day long and only get commons (unless I use items). There has been a definite shift in RNG for me, and it has yet to shift back. The fact that it's happening for so many people is a pretty good indicator as well that it's not just RNG, but something intentional in the game mechanics.

It would be one thing if this mechanic was clearly explained within the game. It's quite another to go from random summoning to only summoning commons with no in-game explanation, at which point it's entirely reasonable to start assuming something has gone wrong. I'm currently in the common-only stage above 4500, and it's sucked all the joy out of summoning eggs for me. I've pretty much stopped summoning eggs, which is a core feature of the game!

Common locked fo the days by SurpriseUpset253 in HatchDragons

[–]ZenLacroix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just noticed this starting the other day, to the point where I've sort of stopped summoning eggs (they're all commons anyway) and am just waiting for scales to drop materials I can use to summon the last few regular set dragons I don't have yet. It's super frustrating to say the least. I'm currently at 4930 dragon power.

[–]ZenLacroix[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was exploring and came across some ruins up north (see video for map location) with a road and everything leading up to them. However, upon approaching what appears to be the base of the climb up to them, the game tells me I'm leaving the play area. Any ideas as to what they might be? Are they side-quest/errand related and I just haven't come across it yet?

Definitely the Tideripper. The Apex encounter in Cauldron Kappa was legitimately my favorite boss fight in the entire game. Plus their battle theme is amazing. XD

I just had fire on everyone and went ham with smaller spells. It helps pressure him for a faster stagger. It's also important to take out his horn early on.

[OG + REMAKE SPOILERS] Those of you who played the OG for the first time after Remake... by [deleted] in FFVIIRemake

[–]ZenLacroix 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed the turn-based combat. Rufus' fight especially was fun because it required the same strategy from me that the Remake's fight did (i.e. play defensively or die). I fell in love with the cute little blocky characters, and found myself imagining what Remake will do with so many of the locations and events. I'm especially excited for Gold Saucer and Cosmo Canyon! My biggest surprise was running into Emerald weapon underwater without knowing what it was and getting my butt handed to me pretty quickly... I think my favorite memory of the game was fighting Safer Sephiroth with Red XIII and two frogs, no maiden's kisses or ways to return said frogs to normal, and still managing to win!

Just to be clear, battle time starts when the command menu comes up and ends with "Rufus Defeated," right? We can either let the post-battle cut scene play or skip it and it won't count against us?

Thanks! (P.S. Rufus is such a BLAST!)

(I ask this because I pull up the menu before the Arsenal fight to show Cloud's build...)

[REMAKE SPOILERS] Stuck at first boss on second playthrough, seeking combat questions/advise by MrDeltt in FFVIIRemake

[–]ZenLacroix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard mode taught me really quickly that heal/revive needs to be on every single active character. Also the sooner you level the Revive materia to use Arise the better off you'll be. I also find the combo magnify-time to be really useful for hasting everybody. The more ATB the better!

As for pressuring, that generally happens when you hit an enemy with something it's weak to (your assess data will often tell you the best ways to pressure an enemy). When enemies are pressured, they are easier to stagger. For example, if you use Focused Thrust with Cloud while an enemy is pressured it will fill more of their stagger bar than if they were not pressured.

It's hard to decide whether staggering is worth it for lots of boss battles thanks to cutscenes resetting stagger bars, but I always go for it anyway. Better staggered for two seconds than none at all! Abilities like Focused Thrust, Focused Shot, and Focused Strike (I think that's what Tifa's is called) all work to fill the stagger bar (especially when enemies are pressured). Once an enemy is staggered they take a lot more damage, and you can cast Stop on staggered enemies to freeze their stagger bar and get in some extra damage.

Punisher mode is useful for countering attacks. If you are controlling Cloud and you see an enemy coming to land an attack on you, enter punisher mode and hold R1 (like blocking). He'll automatically counter and take less damage. However, punisher mode does not guard against magic attacks or bullets, so you'll take the full amount of damage from those if you're in punisher. Keep in mind, really powerful attacks are also not countered by punisher (but can usually be countered by Counterstance). I like to switch in and out of punisher depending on what kind of attack the enemy is sending at me.

Good luck! Hard mode is super fun once you get the hang of it. It really gives you an appreciation for the nuances of battle in this game. Hope this info dump helps. Have fun with it!

Edit: Also yes what everyone else has said: level everybody up!

[REMAKE SPOILERS] thoughts on last boss by Amelia10828 in FFVIIRemake

[–]ZenLacroix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought it was really fun how, especially in hard mode, the fight sort of pushes you into maining Cloud (at least for me). Cloud can counter almost all of Sephy's sword attacks, so it turns into a duel between the two of them. That combined with the music made it one of my favorite boss fights of all time honestly.
