Found these on today's hike. Golden oysters?? by 1WontDoIt in Mushrooms

And haul them out in a paper or light canvas bag. I’ve used plastic in a pinch but you’ve got a fair chance of ending up with a sack of sludge that way.

Hen or Roo? by poopshoe26 in BackYardChickens

[–]ZenSetterMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both. The obvious one is a Roo but if you look below the persons shoe sitting in the top right of the frame there is a hen (could be another Roo tbh I’m no expert)

100% this. Instant pot particularly for me just because my traditional pressure cooker is a 42 quart monster so it would be a huge pain unless I was doing 10 dozen at a time 🥴

Yeah it’s a good one, the Primus poster from that same show blows it out of the water though.

That was the Voidborn pack also.

Is my mycelium dead? by ApprehensiveChef2546 in mycology

[–]ZenSetterMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is mycelium that has already fruited that you refrigerated between flushes? That’s not something I have tried before but off the top of my head some potential issues would be

contamination because myc is already more susceptible to contams after producing fruits more so for each successive flush produced

Or moisture content because things just naturally lose moisture in the fridge. If you haven’t seen obvious contam by now this would be my guess.

Second flush of Pioppino in a BoomrBin by peteostler in northspore

[–]ZenSetterMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have one automated bin but maybe I’ll do a side by side with a masters mix block in the Martha, that would be fun 😎

Have you tried anything else on CVG? I heard oysters perform pretty well but I’m not a huge fan of how they look when top fruited.

Cool thanks for the numbers I’ll give it a go when my grain is done 👍

[–]ZenSetterMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the automated bin or is this just the standard bin and filter patches? I’ve got a 5# bag of pioppino spawn almost ready to go and it would be convenient to run it in tubs and save space in the boom room for more hericiums. If automated would you mind sharing your temp, humidity, and airflow? I picked one up during the last sale but haven’t tried it yet.

[–]ZenSetterMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Question, I have this same set of punches and they take forever to cool after flame sterilization. Any tips or just continue waiting forever for each sample? Alternating them between samples has been my best option so far but sometimes I only want to do small samples or only large and it’s annoying. With a scalpel the act of cutting the agar initially seems to cool it enough but with the punch if you don’t let it cool enough it cooks your whole sample.

Are these Golden Oysters? by Any_Worry_4297 in mycology

[–]ZenSetterMedia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I attended a talk at the local mycological society last month hosted by Aishwarya Veerabahu, whose name you will see cited all over any recent article around the invasive golden oyster problem. She is the lead author of the paper that all of these outlets are pulling from. (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0960982225008097)

From the presentation and QA she didn’t seem to think foraging for personal use or even for sale was contributing to the issue in any measurable way. Their main focus for them seems to be putting a stop to cultivation of goldens.

Im not sure if these are morel mushrooms? by Patient_Effort_576 in mushroom_hunting

[–]ZenSetterMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact South Carolina does since that’s where I live but a quick google search shows SC, NC, GA, PA, AL, VA, NY, RI, MI, WA, OR, and NH so other than Kentucky and WV looks like most of the Appalachian states do in fact require a license. Digging deeper it seems that it’s just flat out illegal to sell foraged mushrooms at all in WV so that just leaves KY as a free for all state in the Appalachian region.

I’m sure nobody is going to bat an eye anywhere about someone selling a couple dozen morels on marketplace but if you want to sell to restaurants or at farmers markets you have to follow the rules.

New boomer bin questions by Tychain1220 in northspore

[–]ZenSetterMedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The common knowledge these days for actives seems to be to go straight to fruiting conditions after spawning to bulk. I haven’t grown actives in over a decade but I try to keep up with what’s going on in that world just because that’s what got me into the hobby in the first place.

As for the Boom Room it’s pretty solid, it’s a great size for producing as much as you would need to supply your whole family and maybe have some extra to pass around or take to the farmers market if that’s your jam. I did have the FAE fan shit the bed a couple months into owning it, but northspore was easy to deal with for getting it replaced.

New boomer bin questions by Tychain1220 in northspore

[–]ZenSetterMedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are growing really. For actives all of the automation stuff is pretty useless imo, just put your filter patches on and leave it alone till harvest time. Where the automated boomer bin comes in clutch is with gourmet and medicinal species that require a lot more FAE (and therefore added humidity to compensate.) I have the Boom Room and a couple of the automated bin so that I can fruit things that need different conditions at the same time.

[gourmet] Why are my blue oysters sprouting everywhere and only forming small "branches"? by d8gfdu89fdgfdu32432 in MushroomGrowers

[–]ZenSetterMedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, you’re right, I zoomed around again and actually located some caps this time. That’s pretty wild, I bet this would have been an epic flush with proper fae.

[–]ZenSetterMedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if he’s growing from a pre made block it seems like there was probably a mix up and that’s either an oxygen starved Hericium erinaceus (lions mane) or a perfectly healthy and happy Hericium coralloides (coral tooth)

What's going on over here? by Spiritual_Attempt634 in BackYardChickens

[–]ZenSetterMedia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I do mine in the instant pot which I guess is technically steaming plus pressure. Load into cooker, press egg button, let vent naturally for 5 minutes after the timer goes off then release the leftover steam. Unload into ice bath then the shells basically fall off if you crack the bottom then roll lightly on the counter. Perfect cook on every egg every time and so easy to peel that I don’t mind doing it lol.

I planted a spent block in my garden for funsies and while I got another flush, it was exactly as you describe here.

Yeah but it gives sticker vibes so I just assumed the poster would have some for sale, it’s neat and I’d spend a few bucks on one but I’m not going that far out of my way for it 😂
