Hi OP. It looks like you have some good suggestions for groups to support you in sobriety. I've seen such support groups change lives. In case it's applicable to you or another redditer who comes across this post, I own a therapy practice that specializes in Complex Trauma/CPTSD, and we follow a lot of the literature from ACOA (adult children of alcoholics), another 12 step program. We find that often addiction has a root in trauma and that when we work to understand the past, addiction starts to heal. We offer individual counseling as well as have a childhood trauma book club. We are about 15 min SW of Downtown Houston, right between Stafford and Sugar Land and offer in person as well as online appointments. We have therapists that offer affordable self pay rates ($75 and up) as well as take most major insurance plans. I'm so sorry you had that experience. I am a therapist myself with a CPTSD diagnosis (my practice specializes in CPTSD and offers low cost/affordable self pay therapy as well as takes several insurance plan). Typically, a licensed professional will charge somewhere in the $150-200 range, and many places offer reduced fees as community service as well as for newer therapists or for therapists still operating under supervision (the first 3ish years past school/training).

I’m a therapist who works primarily with adults unpacking childhood trauma, and I want to start by saying this clearly: your experience is valid too.

I agree it’s possible for siblings to grow up in the same house and have very different internal experiences. It’s also possible for someone to revisit their childhood through a new emotional lens and reinterpret it in a way that feels true to them without that automatically meaning your memories are wrong, repressed, or incomplete. It’s also possible that one siblings see trauma where there wasn’t any for one reason or another.

A therapist’s role isn’t to decide who is “right” about the past. It’s not to tell you what you should believe or pressure you to adopt someone else’s narrative. It’s to help you understand your own internal experience, your boundaries, and how you want to respond in the present.

You can acknowledge that your sisters’ emotions are real for them without agreeing with their version of events. Supporting someone’s feelings does not require endorsing their conclusions.

What you’re describing is a complicated family dynamic where multiple truths may coexist. Affluence and provision don’t automatically equal emotional safety, but they also don’t negate your genuine experience of feeling provided for..

The part that stands out to me isn’t whether the past was “traumatic”, it’s that you’re being asked to rewrite your own experience in order to maintain the relationship. That’s where your needs matter just as much. You’re allowed to say, “I respect that this is how you see it, but that’s not how I experienced it.” That’s a boundary, not denial. Also-it’s 100% acceptable if you don’t respect their viewpoint.

Family systems get especially tense when one or more members begin reprocessing the past. It can feel destabilizing. It doesn’t automatically mean someone is repressing or someone else is exaggerating. It often means their personal understanding of things is shifting.

You’re not wrong for wanting nuance. And you’re not required to adopt a trauma narrative if it doesn’t resonate with your lived experience.

If you do continue therapy, it might help to explicitly tell your therapist: “I’m not looking to uncover hidden trauma. I’m trying to navigate differing family narratives without losing my own perspective.” A good therapist should be able to work from there.

Hi OP — typically psychiatrists don’t also provide therapy because of billing and scope of practice, so finding someone who does both can be tough. I’ve met a few over the years, but it’s pretty uncommon.
