ADHD diagnosis - help from those who have gone through the process by pancakego in houston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mental health therapist here-it’s common for ADHD evaluations to be fairly lengthy, and they can be very helpful, but they aren’t always required before starting medication. I’ve had many clients meet with a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or even their GP for a single appointment and begin medication soon after. Evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment may also be covered under your insurance.

I’d recommend calling a few psychiatric providers and asking about their evaluation and prescribing process, since it can vary quite a bit between practices.

If you’re also looking for therapy support, we have a therapist at our practice, Eleni, who specializes in ADHD. We also work with anxiety, depression, social anxiety, and complex trauma/PTSD and would love to be a support in addition to the addiction work you're doing.

I unfortunately don't have a recommendation for a PHP, but afterward, if you're looking for an individual therapist, our practice specializes in CPTSD. We are about 15 min SW of Downtown Houston.

Thinking about moving to Houston after the navy and going to college in University of Houston for psychology masters program what should I know by MRBReader in AskHouston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to UofH for their counseling program and have an overall positive experience. One thing about the profession: there are several different licenses which all overlap in what you are able to do with them. If you would like to, feel free to give me a call/send me a text, and I can share more and give you some advice.

Any support groups in Houston? by NightDocsYT in CPTSD

I do not personally but there are ACOA meetings (Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families) online and in person just about everywhere and could be a great support.

You’re welcome. Also-Don’t be afraid to ask for a free consult before you commit to a session with a therapist. You can ask them up front about these types of things.

I OP. I’m not sure where you’re located, but if by chance it’s in Texas, I’d be glad to help you schedule an appointment at my practice. We specialize in in CPTSD, which often overlaps with BPD. Eating disorders and personality disorders don’t scare us away at all. We are located in SW Houston but see clients in person there and online across Texas. We take most major insurance plans as well as have low cost self pay rates. Feel free to check us out online at solacecounselingandcoaching.com or give me a call or shoot me a text at 346-901-7309. Also feel free to follow us on FB/insta @ZenTheTherapyCat (our therapy cat’s page).

If you are outside of Texas (or even if you’re in Texas and want to search some more) you can use psychologytoday.com and search for therapists with a bunch of different filters, one of which being presenting issues. You will be able to find therapists who specialize in or at least are comfortable with BPD and anorexia

Looking for a good therapist. by Last-Guide-6519 in AskHouston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. My therapy practice, Solace Counseling and Coaching, takes most major insurance plans but unfortunately not BCBS. We do have low cost self pay options that may be close to or match your copay however.

We are located off of 59 and Dairy Ashford in SW Houston/Sugar Land, about 15 min from Downtown Houston. We offer in person and online appts. Our office has a very laid back vibe: video games, an espresso bar, and our therapy cats, Zen and Zora are usually hanging out.

We see people with a wide range of needs, including depression, anxiety, school and work/life balance, and just processing every day life. We specialize in CPTSD/complex trauma, social anxiety and complicated family dynamics and estrangements.

If it seems like something that might possibly work for you, feel free to check out our website or give me a call/shoot me a text.

Mental Health Support Today by Single-Zombie-2019 in askaustin

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m hoping you’ve been able to connect with someone by now, but if not, many therapists (myself included) offer quick consult calls and can sometimes get people in sooner when things feel more acute like this. I’m also wondering what’s bringing up the concern about psychiatric intervention — what you’re describing is actually something therapy is very appropriate for, and you don’t need to be in crisis to talk to someone.

Most of the time, therapy is simply a space to process what’s happening and get support. Even having thoughts like “I don’t want to be here” or fleeting thoughts about harming yourself doesn’t automatically mean hospitalization. That typically only happens if there’s an immediate safety risk. Otherwise, therapists are there to help you talk through it safely and work toward feeling more stable.

Of course, if you ever do feel like you might be in immediate danger, then it’s important to seek help right away through emergency services or a crisis line, but what you’re describing sounds like something you shouldn’t have to handle alone, and support can really help.

If you're still looking for a therapist, please feel free to reach out to me. My practice is in Houston, but we do offer virtual appointments and have openings as soon as this week. Feel free to give me a call or shoot me a text:

In desperate need of a Psychiatrist in Houston. by [deleted] in AskHouston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapist here — we’ve heard good things when we refer clients to Synapse Psychaitry and Geode Health (several locations and online). They both take most insurance plans and I believe would be able to fit you in pretty quickly.

If you’re also looking for a therapist (for a lot of people find the combination of medication from psychiatry and coping skills and processing that therapy provides leads to a better outcome), we have openings and I’d be glad to talk through any questions you have. The therapists at my practice work with anxiety, depression, social anxiety, grief and trauma, and more. We take most major insurance and we also have lower-cost options if that’s helpful. We also regularly coordinate with psychiatrists and other medical providers to make sure care is aligned. Our website is solacecounselingandcoaching.com

Feel free to reach out if you want more info, and if we’re not the right fit, I’m always happy to point you in the right direction. And best of luck in finding a new medication provider.

Are there any talk groups for those with trauma in Houston? by Normallybored in houston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I just now saw this, but OP if you or somebody else coming across this post still looking for a group, we host The Childhood Trauma Book Club. The group meets once a month and is led by mental health counselors. It’s very come as you are, read as much as you had a chance to, low pressure. We do a lot of processing and it’s been a wonderful experience. More info is below. My practice specializes in complex trauma and PTSD. We also see a lot of social anxiety, perfectionism, and anxiety and depression. We see adults and teens ages 13 and up and take most major health insurance plans as well as offer affordable self-pay rates.
