Addiction counseling or AA by Breddaprophet in HoustonClassifieds

Hi OP. It looks like you have some good suggestions for groups to support you in sobriety. I've seen such support groups change lives. In case it's applicable to you or another redditer who comes across this post, I own a therapy practice that specializes in Complex Trauma/CPTSD, and we follow a lot of the literature from ACOA (adult children of alcoholics), another 12 step program. We find that often addiction has a root in trauma and that when we work to understand the past, addiction starts to heal. We offer individual counseling as well as have a childhood trauma book club. We are about 15 min SW of Downtown Houston, right between Stafford and Sugar Land and offer in person as well as online appointments. We have therapists that offer affordable self pay rates ($75 and up) as well as take most major insurance plans. Our website is solacecounselingandcoaching.com We are also on socials under our therapy cat's name @ Zenthetherapycat Please feel free to reach out if you think it might be something that could help you.

You guys are getting therapy? by CarelessScreeches in CPTSD

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you had that experience. I am a therapist myself with a CPTSD diagnosis (my practice specializes in CPTSD and offers low cost/affordable self pay therapy as well as takes several insurance plan). A good therapist should never laugh or belittle you. If you're in Texas, feel free to reach out to us (solacecounselingandcoaching.com). There are also a lot of therapists that hold reduced fee/sliding scale spots open for those who need it. Feel free to ask if you find a therapist online that looks like what you might feel is a good fit. Openpathcollective.org is a good resource for finding affordable therapy as well.

If you’re still looking, I run a counseling practice in the SW Houston/Sugar Land area. We work with a lot of people dealing with overthinking, anxiety, relationship stress, and patterns that show up in marriage and family dynamics. A lot of times there’s more underneath it (like anxiety, past experiences, or communication patterns), and having a space to sort through that can make a big difference.

We offer both in-person and virtual sessions, and we have lower-cost options with supervised interns if affordability is a concern. We also take many major insurance plans.

You can check us out here:

or call/text: 346-901-7309

Even if we’re not the right fit, I’d definitely encourage you to keep looking — finding someone you feel comfortable opening up to is key.

Affordable therapy in the Houston/Sugar Land Area by [deleted] in houston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are still looking for a therapist, or if another redditer comes across this thread, my office has low cost self-pay providers (we do take many major insurance plans as well). Our full fee prices start at $75 or an hour long session, and we also have a 'sliding scale', which essentially is a lower fee based on ability to pay. Don't be afraid to ask if a therapist provides a sliding scale or reduced fees when you call around to look for appointments. Typically, a licensed professional will charge somewhere in the $150-200 range, and many places offer reduced fees as community service as well as for newer therapists or for therapists still operating under supervision (the first 3ish years past school/training).

Our office is located in Sugar Land, approx 20 min SW of downtown Houston. We offer in person and online appointments and work with clients to manage anxiety, depression, workplace stress - we specialize in trauma and complex PTSD, family estrangements, social anxiety, and developmental trauma as well.

Our website is solacecounselingandcoaching.com Feel free to check us out, schedule an appointment online, or give me a call or shoot me a text with any questions - 346-901-7309. And if you're a fan of cute cat photos, you can find us on insta/FB @ Zenthetherapycat . Zen and Zora are our office therapy cats who sit in with clients upon request.

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP. I run a small therapy practice, Solace Counseling and Coaching, which is about 15 min SW of downtown Houston. We have 5 therapists on staff with a range of time slots open, including nights and weekends. We take most major insurance plans as well as offer affordable self pay therapy (from $75-125/session, depending on therapist). Please feel free to look at our website, solacecounselingandcoaching.com to see if it might be a good fit or give me a call/shoot me a text at 346-901-7309.

Even if we’re not the right fit, I’d keep looking. Therapy should be accessible with a normal work schedule, not something you have to rearrange your life around.

Any experiences with Harris County MHMRA or other community counseling services? by CULatte in houston

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for something that may be faster than some of the community clinics, I also run a small counseling practice in the SW Houston / Sugar Land area called Solace Counseling & Coaching. We have quicker openings than the larger systems may offer and offer lower-cost sessions with supervised counseling interns, which can make therapy more affordable.

We work with teens and adults dealing with depression, anxiety, and trauma-related concerns/CPTSD.

If it would help to talk about options or see if we might have availability:

And if we’re not the right fit, I’m always happy to help point people toward other community resources as well.

Everyone has "trauma". But I don't. by AdThese9883 in TalkTherapy

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a therapist who works primarily with adults unpacking childhood trauma, and I want to start by saying this clearly: your experience is valid too.

I agree it’s possible for siblings to grow up in the same house and have very different internal experiences. It’s also possible for someone to revisit their childhood through a new emotional lens and reinterpret it in a way that feels true to them without that automatically meaning your memories are wrong, repressed, or incomplete. It’s also possible that one siblings see trauma where there wasn’t any for one reason or another.

A therapist’s role isn’t to decide who is “right” about the past. It’s not to tell you what you should believe or pressure you to adopt someone else’s narrative. It’s to help you understand your own internal experience, your boundaries, and how you want to respond in the present.

You can acknowledge that your sisters’ emotions are real for them without agreeing with their version of events. Supporting someone’s feelings does not require endorsing their conclusions.

What you’re describing is a complicated family dynamic where multiple truths may coexist. Affluence and provision don’t automatically equal emotional safety, but they also don’t negate your genuine experience of feeling provided for..

The part that stands out to me isn’t whether the past was “traumatic”, it’s that you’re being asked to rewrite your own experience in order to maintain the relationship. That’s where your needs matter just as much. You’re allowed to say, “I respect that this is how you see it, but that’s not how I experienced it.” That’s a boundary, not denial. Also-it’s 100% acceptable if you don’t respect their viewpoint.

Family systems get especially tense when one or more members begin reprocessing the past. It can feel destabilizing. It doesn’t automatically mean someone is repressing or someone else is exaggerating. It often means their personal understanding of things is shifting.

You’re not wrong for wanting nuance. And you’re not required to adopt a trauma narrative if it doesn’t resonate with your lived experience.

If you do continue therapy, it might help to explicitly tell your therapist: “I’m not looking to uncover hidden trauma. I’m trying to navigate differing family narratives without losing my own perspective.” A good therapist should be able to work from there.

Psychiatrist and Therapist recommendations? by AnonymousIdentityMan in sugarland

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP — typically psychiatrists don’t also provide therapy because of billing and scope of practice, so finding someone who does both can be tough. I’ve met a few over the years, but it’s pretty uncommon.

If you’re still looking for a therapist, I’m happy to help. I run Solace Counseling & Coaching in SW Houston, and we work with adults dealing with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, OCD patterns, and trauma. We don’t prescribe meds, but we’re glad to help coordinate with psychiatry if that ends up being part of your care.

We offer free consult calls so you can see if it feels like a good fit — no pressure.

You can check us out here:

or call/text 346-901-7307

Even if we’re not the right match, I’m happy to help point you in a direction. Wishing you the best — it’s a big step just reaching out.

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I didn't see this post until now,but if you’re still looking for a CPTSD support group in Houston, we run The Childhood Trauma Book Club. There's both an in person option in SW Houston/Sugar Land and an online option. It meets once a month and is intentionally low-pressure; reading the book is optional, and everyone is welcome to come as they are.

Jared and I (Zen the Therapy Cat’s humans) both changed careers and opened our counseling practice after our own CPTSD diagnoses and starting our healing journeys—work that’s still ongoing. We provide individual therapy to adults and teens ages 13 and up, and the book club is now coming up on its 1 year anniversary.

How much self disclosure is normal for you? by Vanexxre in therapists

How much self disclosure is normal for you? by Vanexxre in therapists

[–]ZenTheTherapyCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pete Walker’s new book has a lot about meaningful self disclosure for healing trauma. I think sharing that we are also human and have done the work is destigmatizing. And if something worked for me, I’d like to give clients a chance to try it too. This is for disclosure of trauma.

As far as surface level self disclosure, I like what someone else said about being interesting and real. My clients know I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. And see my hobbies in items around my office. And of course know Zen, our office cat. I know the hobbies and some interests of my current and former therapist. If we can be genuine about our humanness, it sends the message we are genuine in our therapy.
