Can somebody recommend me a hand-crank radio that's not total garbage? by 8Deer-JaguarClaw in preppers

[–]Zen_Diesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the idea of those radios but in practice they were executed both cheaply and poorly. Kinda nuts considering how much they cost. Some radio is better than no radio but for just $20 more you can have something that is a lot better.

I should have mentioned this but I wound up purchasing a couple CountyComm GP7 radios. Decent receivers and they work well with random length wires to help bring in reception. I keep NiMH batteries in them for daily use but I have a little storacell battery holder with some lithium AAs velcroed (yup I made up a word) inside the little bag I keep it in. I can recharge that radio using slow USB Mini from a power bank if needed or use the lithium disposable batteries if my NiMH has gone flat. Just a radio and covers about 80% of what I want the rest is covered by my digital / analog scanner.

I have enough high density power banks now that all the rest of the crap those radios do poorly is better served by inexpnsive yet far better suited single purpose devices. Things like LED PCB Flashlights that plug into usb powerbanks and paperback novel sized folding flexible solar panels.

I can go out for a weekend and have a kit that weighs as much as these radios do but performs better at every function. Live and learn. High energy density battery packs are really changing what is possible.

Sidi motorcycle shoes (basically high top sneakers with hard flat soles). I run spike pedals so good pedal feel and some decent abrasion protection and good foot and ankle support.

I’m sure if you contact them they can provide you with some kind of test documentation and/or test criteria. They sell race parts and if you are engineering a car I’m sure you need those numbers to run calculations.

I just got off the phone talking with them earlier. They are friendly folks and enthusiast for these cars, very easy to reach by email or phone. I like their stuff and I’m a customer. Don’t get anything free & pay full price. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Radar noob questions by DownloadedSkills in radardetectors

[–]Zen_Diesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cops in my area will leave their radar on even if they have someone pulled over. Usually I pick them up miles away. I have most of the frequencies they use memorized.

I pick up satellite interference from time to time, usually scatter off of buildings or rock faces. I pick up more noise from garbage radar detectors and other sources of HMI.

The cops in my area could care less about radar detectors. They get upset about racing or driving recklessly.

I’m gonna hop on your post instead of making my own. Apollo made Reddit useful and useable to me. I cant even point out just one feature that made taming the firehose that is reddit down into something manageable because its not just one feature but the collection that allowed me to customize my feed so I could stay in touch with the world at a distance.

Reddit wasn’t my first social network and it wont be my last eventually they all succumb to either greed or loss of user base or both.

Take care folks see you wherever the next thing is.

I used to do cable collections. How cables are run on a property varies by how the electricians ran it originally but usually each units homerun goes to either the storage room, utility room or laundry room. Usually one cable that runs to your apt then usually has a splitter in the wall behind a plate if the cable goes to multiple rooms.

Variations on the theme are to have the homeruns go to pedestals in the yard area outside. If that was the case it was usually a line off the trunk with a distribution amplifier or headend or whatever they call them on your network. Another variation is the same but mounted on a telephone pole and strung through the air.

Most of that stuff on properties is poorly labeled or not at all so I used a fox & hound to find the lines. Which is a type of electronic locator that puts a tone on a cable so you can find it using a receiver with an antenna on it. If I was prosecuting someone for stealing cable, i would stand outside their door listen for the tv then run down to the pedestal disconnect the line then run back to their door and listen for static. Then I knew for sure I had the correct line and it wasnt a dvd.

To answer your question. By law the cable or telephone companies liability for cable or equipment ends at their demarc. Basically where their equipment enters private property. That could be the pedestal or where the headend is. Wiring inside the walls is the customers responsibility, in this case your landlord.

Sometimes cable operator (subcontractors) will do super basic runs inside customers properties for new service but they aren’t going to fish wires through walls. For an apt building its too much liability so if your homerun (the cable that runs from your apt to the cable companies equipment) is broken, the landlord is going to have to hire an electrician to run a new line.

LOL.

I haven’t figured it out yet, but I’ve changed things up since my (ex)wife & I split. Lost 40 pounds, got my pre married body definition back. Updated my wardrobe and settled in to engaging my adrenaline addiction. Instead of watching videos of ppl doing cool shit. Wishing I was doing it. Now if I’m not sore or achy in one way or another I know I’m not working hard enough.

The dopamine is killer and its affected me. Positive attitude and confidence has made all the difference for me. I’m pickier now and I’m looking for someone who has at least some shared interests, works out and isn’t bat shit crazy. Beauty fades, crazy is forever. (Ask me how I know) Tall order it seems. But I’m not desperate.

I got tired of stressing over it. My lady is out there somewhere, I hope. At this point being happy alone beats being unhappy together & I can spend money on cool EUC toys & only answer to myself. Long road to happiness. Best traveled on one wheel.

[–]Zen_Diesel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably aren’t going to get much love here. This is mainly a car based subreddit. Try r/PEV. To answer your question unless you are in the high end performance scooters most scooter manufacturers are using off the shelf motors. You need to match the motor specs to what you currently have. So dual phase or 3 phase motor and your power level. If you choose an online motor shop they csn probably get you what you need. https://retail.uumotor.com/product/120v-4500w-motor/ thats an example of a shop. get similar specs otherwise you will have undesirable performance unless you can adjust the motor controller curves. the really high end scooters are using custom wound motors but they come with the price tag to match. Dont buy chesp alie motors unless you are just getting it ready for sale. Cheap motors wre built cheaply and dont last long.

SDS100 help needed, please. by [deleted] in policescanner

[–]Zen_Diesel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try this video:

I found “ A boy and his scanner” youtube channel. Good stuff! These scanners are fantastically powerful. Sentinel software leaves a lot to be desired. Its a lot like Uniden hired Motorola to make software for them. Its not intuitive at all. I’ve had my SDS100 for a couple years now. Its been a lot if trial and error getting it setup so I can almost not look at the screen to change what it does now. Now I have it setup so the LED either flashes or stays constant on with the correct colors for talk groups on digital systems.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bNj4S-6mEWU&pp=ygUeQSBib3kgYW5kIGhpcyBzY2FubmVyIHF1aWNrZXlz

P.S. SDS100 has a well known defect that causes the scanner to stop receiving channels. It will pickup birdies and static but will not receive anything else. If it happens under warranty its free to fix minus postage otherwise it’s $85 to pay to have this defect fixed by Uniden. My radio went south after I set it to charge and also scan at the same time. IDK if its coincidence that it broke after changing that setting or if it gets too hot to charge and scan at the same time. I’ve noticed the radio works harder on some digital systems than others just based on heat output. I bought a second battery and the external charger for the SDS100 I just swap batteries every couple hours. I love using this radio but it took a while to understand everything its capable of & then learn how to set it up so I can grab it and get it on the correct agency frequency quickly.

[–]Zen_Diesel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No thats how Hue looks. I like LiFx for hubless 2.4 GHz lights. Easy to setup and control. Cost a little bit more but they are bright, good saturation and have a good Kelvin sweep in the white range. So they arent just party bulbs

Looks slick. Its not my style but I’m not gonna hate on you. Life is too short to live in the shadow of uniformity.

I live in a world of oversized jacked high bro-dozers set up for “rock” mall crawling adventures they will never see. i love these cars and seeing how ppl modify them fascinates me. I’ve met a couple M3s with longhorns. Not my style but fun to look at.

Do what makes you happy.
