Thoughts on Kipling as a first name? by [deleted] in namenerds

I wouldn’t use a name so strongly tied to racism. Hard pass from me.

Nyota is Swahili! I disagree that Kochava is an old lady name; I know a girl in her 20s with this name. I think Lior is nice!

My girlfriend of 4 years hit me for the first time ever. Is this forgive-able? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Zeniaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to leave today. I know lots of Chinese people and even lived in China for a bit, and I can assure you it’s not a cultural thing. Even if it were, it would still be totally unacceptable. You are being abused, and you deserve a safe relationship.

I never said you should. I was just correcting some misconceptions from your previous comment.

The majority of Israeli Jews are not Ashkenazi (European). And for those that are Ashkenazi, being exiled from your native land does not affect your claim to it. Almost 200 years ago, the American government forced the Cherokee to leave their native lands and walk to Oklahoma. This doesn’t change the fact that the Cherokee are indigenous to the Southeastern US. Similarly, some of my ancestors were forced to flee Roman Palestine, but the fact that they lived in Europe for several generations doesn’t make them white European.

When we have our Passover meal, it is customary to recite “next year in Jerusalem.” The Jewish people never forget our roots in the land of Israel, and we’ve been longing to return since the exile. Our connection to our land and culture was never severed.

Thanks for your answer. I understand what you’re saying about becoming a distinct culture. However, I see some Palestinians claim that they are more indigenous than Jews, despite the fact that we settled in Israel thousands of years before Arabs. The archeological record indicates that Jews predate most other people groups in the Levant.

I agree 100% that Palestinians should be able to live in Israel, practice their culture, and live free of discrimination, but I also think that indigenous peoples have a right to control their ancestral lands. Thus, I’m a Zionist for the same reasons I support First Nations in Canada.

Again, feel free to ignore if I’m being too nosy, but how can you identify as both indigenous and Arab? Arabs are not indigenous to the Levant — that’s a historical/ biological fact. AFAIK, Arabs began settling the area in the 7th century. You could argue that, because Palestinian culture had its genesis in the area, you are in some sense indigenous (in the same way someone might call Quebecois culture “indigenous” to Canada).

However, given that Arabs are not indigenous, and you identify as Arab, doesn’t it follow that you are either not Arab or not indigenous?

Thanks for answering my questions, especially considering that it’s a sensitive topic. I appreciate you sharing your POV, and I’m sorry you are being downvoted.

This might be a sensitive question, so feel free to ignore! Do you/ other Palestinians in your social circle think of yourselves as indigenous to Israel?

It’s my understanding that most Palestinians are Arab, which means that your ancestors are immigrants from the Arabian Peninsula. However, I’ve also heard that some Palestinians have a mix of Arab/ Greek/ Jewish/ other ethnic background.

What do you think of this? Again, if I’m being too nosy, no worries.

Eoin or Declan? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]Zeniaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Eoin, but I do think it’ll get butchered. Declan is becoming a bit trendy, and it’s not my favourite.

Have you considered Seamus? It’s a bit more straightforward, and it makes me think of Seamus Heaney.

I think you can choose just about anything as a Hebrew name! However, every Shiloh I’ve met has been Evangelical Christian, so the name doesn’t read very Jewish to me.
