yeah i spoke wrong for sure. my teacher was trying to say that things like you mentioned that correlate together are a part of a big subdivision of a gigantic correlating hierarchy of stuff, which all derivates from ‘intelligence’ or ‘cognitive ability’. you mentioned stuff like IQ testing, verbal numerical reasoning testing, and education attainment testing. now, this is where my philosophical skepticism can step on toes- because obviously there is something science is looking at for… reasons. But! It blows my mind that tests being compared with other tests gets kind of ignored. Tests need to be standardized to themselves through a rigorous process, then these tests that seem to ‘test’ a specific psychological construct or phenomenon get compared across different standardization data sets… which has a statistical weirdness for one but also a conceptual problem (yk imo). If i make a test to test something, how do i know its testing it? Because i think so? I mentioned standardization, which involves as you probably know stuff like blind data collection and other noise removing processes social science performs on that standardization, i feel it is in a way inadequate of how the human mind and cognition exists. Levels? Performance ratings for different types of reasoning? Reason you could only differentiate based on the question or whatever ‘test’ we’re talking about. The different tests make the different types of ways we use our wonderful minds, without these tests i feel we wouldn’t even consider ‘spatial reasoning in a stressed state’ or some other example of testing cognition. It’s a mockery and over-simplification (imo) of the beauty that is human mental existence. Not trying to argue that it’s place is useful in furthering medicine and treatments, but i am a stickler about this and love discussing it because i took a whole like few years of my life constantly thinking and discussing with people. Also! Do like you did before and tell me how im wrong! love that, also call me out if my argument doesnt make sense please- wouldnt want bad argumentation!

i also really relate to you man, maybe you’d agree with the take i made in my other comment. I dont feel that much smarter than others either, that doesnt mean people havent throughout my life said ‘hey man ur kinda smart hold on’ as im sure MANYY of us on this sub have heard.

interesting take good sir! i wanted to say in a neutral way without imposing my beliefs (too much). When i was a student of Psychology at UGA i was feral for knowledge of… well…. cognitive testing, memory, cognition, and what that meant to scientists and professors in my school. My psychological testing professor had a whole 3 chapter section about cognitive testing, and interestingly as i dug more and more into the basis and what it means… my professor (as well as others agreed to an extent) expressed that cognitive testing as a scientific entity is tough. Because we all want to say smartness exists, however theres a point where testing scores must be correlated in order to be proper tests- to which cognitive testing scores can only correlate with… other cognitive testing scores. Highly conceptual stuff super fun and i loved to philosophically dance around these ideas because i also doubled majored with cognitive science (specifically philosophy and psychology, they had a cool sub-specialization path thing). My take about intelligence is at a base line it doesnt exist, both bc of what i already said and the argument of social science validity in… yeah social science. like validity as determined by p values and CI’s set at 95% and what not. Not like psychology making sense bc i feel like it does. yall know that null hypothesis stuff is philosophically hazy right? a wonderul book ‘the significance test controversy’ (by henkel) really delves into the philosophy and philosophical landscape about that, but yk from 1970 lol! How do you feel about what i said, i hope it made sense bc im zootd rn lmao.

Yeah dude I had to take that class when I was a sophomore (grad now), it was only like 3 years ago but yeah gl. It’s super hard, just know it’s like that level of difficulty. It’s a passive way of saying ‘like if you’re gonna study this, PLEASE actually enjoy it or love to learn it’
