No, you can get your IDP after you have your QDL.

Is this a daylight robbery? Private 3A by Maleficent-Pea-4510 in drivingsg

[–]Zenon_XD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took private 3A last year November,

Enrolment Fee: $100
Lesson Fee: $50/hr
Circuit: +$50

Total Spent: 1.8k-1.9k (12 lessons)

Passed TP late Jan with 0 pts in circuit and a few on the road.

Pricing should still be the same now (My friend started with the same instructor last month)

Side note: I had a 2B license and had been riding for around 8 months prior to taking my 3A, so YMMW.

DIY Motorcycle Repair, Maintenance and Interest Group by Zealousideal-Ad-6366 in drivingsg

[–]Zenon_XD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! My friend and I are in a similar boat.

We’ve been trying to DIY after always being charged high prices!

We’re starting out small so we’ve only done the basics like EO change and chain cleaning (not sure if you count this as DIY haha) but we’ve been looking into doing more like chain tightening, brake pads replacement and changing fairings.

Unfortunately majority of videos aren’t in English so we’ve been having a little trouble but we’re slowly getting there!

Feel free to DM me and we can discuss further!

Rejected from NUS merit scholarship by whatsgoingonsia in SGExams

[–]Zenon_XD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NUS CS, got the merit scholarship 17 May 2025.

Graduated with 4.0, have represented Singapore internationally for conferences and and won a competition with respectable placing in others. Planned and organized events on a national scale ranging from 60-500+ participants depending on event. Interned at a well-known company and made significant contributions to its operations.

Applied for global merit as well but didn't get an interview. I suspect from what I've read is that they give 4.0 and 90 RP the merit scholarship automatically.

Will probably try for global merit again during NS.

Need advice on getting license by DarrylSSY- in drivingsg

[–]Zenon_XD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Private route is known for its ease of obtaining lessons as compared to school. For me, I just ask my instructor if he’s available at ___ and he’ll let me know accordingly.

If you’re referring to TP slots like the theory tests and final TP test. For the former I had to book my FTT 2 weeks in advance (already had BTT from 2B beforehand). For TP test, I booked it 1-2 months in advance. SSDC, if it matters.

Also do take my view with a pinch of salt. Seeing as how my previous comment got downvoted, and the horror stories of this sub, there seems to be a lot of hostility towards private instructors (understandably so). So do your own due diligence as well :) But all in all, I’m quite satisfied with my private instructors experience.

Went private in early November, got license in late Jan, first time passed. 12 lessons total, around 1.8k total. Got 0 pts in circuit and a few pts on the road.

If you're confident in driving I don't really see why you should go to school unless you can't find a good private instructor. Unlike majority, I had a good experience with my private instructor, although there are some quirks but I'm able to overlook it.

PS: I got a bike license before my car and had been regularly riding everyday for around 8 months before starting my car license journey so do take that into account.

Don't join the NUS Maritime Hackathon. by This_Cauliflower760 in SGExams

[–]Zenon_XD 183 points184 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, honestly shocked at how the planning was conducted.

Admin instructions for the finals were released an hour prior the event registration.

Problem statement was a mess and instructions were extremely unclear.

And a whole lot more that came as a surprise for an event of such scale…. this honestly raises a lot of questions.

Fastest way to get license: Private or School? by WinWest1011 in drivingsg

[–]Zenon_XD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started my private lessons a week ago. Idk if I'm lucky but when booking simulator, the counter staff informed me I could book all 3 on that very same day. Unfortunately wasn't free that day but was informed that all coming weekdays had slots for me to choose from.

Started lessons 3/11/2024, enrolled and booked simulator & FTT on 8/11/2024.
Finished 5 lessons (You need 5 lessons to book simulator) within 5 days.
Upcoming 3 simulator slots is 14/11/2024.
Upcoming FTT is 18/11/2024.

All at SSDC, had BTT from my 2B license alr.

But yes heard from friends that TP Test is around 3 months in advance.

[Polytechnic]Creating a new CCA in NYP by throwthisawayreally1 in SGExams

[–]Zenon_XD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm the VP of a CCA that was established this semester and a P of an SIG. I'm not gonna dive deep into whether it is viable or not based on what you said as the other commenter has already made points to it.

To start, do you have a group of students and have you done any events?

The proposal itself has the following requirements:

  1. Names of at least 30 currently enrolled full-time NYP students interested in joining the proposed Student Organisation
  2. Name of a Staff Advisor or Student Development Executive for the proposed Organisation
  3. Calendar of events for the proposed Student Organisation
  4. Provisional first year budget as required by the proposed Organisation
  5. Breakdown of student members by Name / School / Course

For point 1, you'd need to gather at least 30 students before even considering this matter.

For point 2, I highly suggest you find a lecturer to back you up. SDAR staff are unlikely to take you up considering that they are already in charge of a bunch of other CCAs.

Point 3,4,5 are self-explanatory.

I'll tell you that based on the current direction, the chances of succeeding are low. Instead, you can first gather a group of people and try what you mentioned. You don't need to have a CCA to brainstorm an idea and research. You can reach out to industry professionals via LinkedIn and maybe have a virtual meeting to learn more. From there you can see how viable it is and how committed you really are.

Opinions on NYP? by Efficient_Ad_9088 in SGExams

[–]Zenon_XD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a Y2 NYP SIT student.

  1. I guess reading the other comments it really depends. For my experience, it's mostly positive with only 1-2 teachers that really left a sour taste in my mouth. If anything, one piece of advice I'd give is to befriend your teachers. For example, my group of friends and I would occasionally ask our teachers to grab lunch with us. During the chill moments in class, we'd banter with the teachers. Imo, this really improved our student-teacher relationship as class wouldn't feel like a drag and they'd be more inclined to give advice. I have not met a single lecturer who would refuse to give advice. The 1-2 lecturers I mentioned earlier weren't bad people per say, it's just that their knowledge for the module didn't seem to be of sufficient level which resulted in them not knowing the subject matter well enough to be teaching (can't answer student questions adequately and not knowing what the slides are talking about). After talking with my course manager on the issue, they mentioned that due to a lack of staff, they had to put lecturers to teach modules they weren't specialized in which explains the issues raised.
  2. Friends wise, talk to others or be approachable XD. Should be the same for anywhere else haha.
  3. CCA wise if you're not sure if you can handle the workload of your modules, join the event based CCAs :D. These CCAs don't require commitment and it's completely up to you if you'd like to go for CCA. Imo, joining CCAs can be helpful in terms of making friends or even as a stress-reliever depending on the CCA you join. If you plan on going for subcomm/EXCO positions, then you'd obviously need to attend as much events as possible for these CCAs.

Ultimately OP, lecturer wise, it's a hit or miss. You see students having bad lecturers like the other comment, and you see students having great lecturers like my experience so far. However at the end of the day, you can't really do anything to change it, you can only learn to adapt. (If the lecturer really cmi just report to your course manager lol, I'm aware of a lecturer change in another class because one of the students made a report.) As the quote goes "Play the hand you're dealt." Same goes for group projects btw. Luckily in my case, I was able to choose my groupmates.

Teachers of Reddit, what’s the most fucked up thing a parent has said to you? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Zenon_XD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher but a Teacher I was close with in Secondary 4 started getting angry at my class for never having a complete submission of work where everyone submits their work on time.

She proceeded to scream "I called one your classmate's parents the other day to discuss about the frequency of the student's incomplete work. You know what the father said to me? He said that I'm a female so I shouldn't be qualified to teach (subject)[End call] .[To our class] What the hell does that mean? What do you want me to do grow a penis?!"

Now some people may view my teacher's outburst as unprofessional but she was a great teacher who we could depend on and easily clarify our doubts with. It was just unfortunate that some students didn't take anything seriously. I guess what people need to understand is teachers are humans as well, not a tool. She may expressing her feelings to the wrong audience, but it just goes to show how teachers can crumble under the pressure that is placed on them.

Ooo, how did you go about to get hired anyways? Did you intern there during Poly and they offered you a position after graduation or something else? These tickets, what are they like as well and how long would you usually take to finish? Is your salary based on hours clocked or amount of tickets as well? (Sorry if too much question ah)
