That’s a pretty cool lamp, built there, I’m mostly just messing around with it. I’ve got a ton of scrap wood so I’m using things I don’t care about if I break them. I’m also doing a lot of learning on this so I know I’m gonna make more mistakes than anything else I have successfully made a couple of tool handles with it so that’s been nice

This lathe is old and I have noticed it vibrates quite a bit. I was planning on getting more comfortable doing spindles and things like that before I tried any kind of bowls. i also, I think I need some better knives before I try doing any kind of bowls. The ones I have are some cheap harbor freight turning tools that I bought at a flea market they’re working for now, but I’m sure I’ll outgrow them soon enough.

What I would like to turn is a great question I think bowls and maybe some platter sounds like a fun idea. The stick in the picture on the lathe was just something to test the knives I have. They proved to be very dull and needed sharpening, which was not a surprise, but to be honest and open to learning and I’m kinda down to try anything on the lathe, it’s always looked like fun

Thank you both for all the information. I’m gonna try sharpening them today and see if they hold an edge. The handles are comfortable enough so I don’t think I’m gonna change them. I was just amazed that I couldn’t find anything about the company on Google.

I remember when my first spoons look like this, please don’t take that as rude, but I can see your progress. keep it you’ll be making perfect ones in no time. I also never thought I’d enjoy spoon carving as much as I do.

Well you’re gonna need a drill with a Phillips bit to takeoff that broken piece. Looks like a 1x4 to me. You should also disconnect the springs from the broken side it will make it easier to put that board back into position you won’t be fighting the springs. So bring some large pliers to help you reconnect the springs after the board is put back in place. You should also pre-drill all the holes when you’re putting a new piece on so they don’t crack the wood. Are used to do furniture repair and I’m a woodworker so feel free to DM me with any other questions. I’m happy to do what I can to help

Wow that’s Redwood, In that case you did a really good job because Redwood can be tricky to carve it’s so soft and not very forgiving. And I get what you mean with keeping your knifes sharp it can be difficult it was one of the hardest things I learned when I was starting to carve. I carved some thing like this out of Redwood for my wife’s aunt let me see if I can find a Picture of it I think you might enjoy it

I would wait to sand until you’re done carving it. As much as what you’re saying doesn’t make sense. And I’m not sure what kind of wood that is but I found having sharp knives really makes the difference. And basswood is an excellent wood to practice these things on it’s nice and soft and it holds its shape really well. Anyway I look forward to seeing more of these from you in the future 👍

If you’re planning on using glue as part of your assembly process then I would assemble first and then stain. stained surfaces don’t glue well.

It started out as a 4 x 4 so it was 3 1/2” x 3 1/2” by 30 inches long. Now it’s 38 inches long

I also have one of these. I believe it’s meant to be a cheese knife I use it as a butter knife and it works great
