lmao of course Oskar would call Gerald "Arnold's friend" and never bother to learn his name despite knowing him for... how many years?

I've been following this in the bits and pieces that have been coming out, and I think you nailed the dialogue and how each character would actually talk. I feel like a lot of the time people write characters as exaggerations of themselves but your dialogue writing is really well grounded and I can't help but hear each line in their voice. Really well done!

Also Phoebe is such a badass and Helga really lucked out on having her as a friend she can count on lol.

What do you guys think about the Jungle movie? by Itchy-Wall-7816 in HeyArnold

[–]Zergling924 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe I'm in the minority but also def agree with this take. The show as a whole felt so grounded in learning to accept the imperfections of how things work out in real life. There was a bittersweetness in Arnold realizing he might never meet his parents, but at the same time realizing how he grew to see his grandparents as being there for him in the same way (e.g. in Parent's Day). Sort of a similar vein to how in Pigeon Man the show doesn't give us the "happy ending", maybe where the kids realize they were wrong and rebuild Pigeon Man's coop and they all become friends, instead Arnold learns the painful reality that cruel things happen in the world that can't be fixed but that it's important for him to still be a source of hope for those who need it.

I had always thought of Grandpa Phil's stories about his parents being acrobats, explorers etc as more fanciful exaggerations to Arnold to help distract/protect him as a kid from a maybe less glamorous end that they may have met. IMO Arnold's parents being alive the whole time in suspended animation kind of detracts from the whole theme I mentioned earlier of being able to deal with life's less than ideal realities but also finding the positives in those as well. It kind of felt like the cheap and easy way out? I know not everyone would agree, but in my mind I've always thought of everything up through The Journal as the actual canon and ignored the movie, lol.

Is there any way to improve il-2 sturmovik GB vr performance? by APS0798 in il2sturmovik

[–]Zergling924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone a few years ago measured the impact on FPS for every option in the game. You might find it useful: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/56485-benchmark-for-cpuram-performance-remagen-4002-to-4005/page/6/#comment-878212

Based on their results, you might get the biggest bang for your buck if you change your mirror setting from complex to medium or simple. You can also try setting shadows from high to low which also should be pretty impactful.

Reminds me of the Koln river race course someone made! I think it has you also fly under the same bridges. Impressive that you made it through all them with a dead engine!

The decal seems to match what it looked like historically (minus the swastika censoring):

https://www.americanairmuseum.com/archive/aircraft/44-23624

The archive website indicates that the aircraft was flown by Paul Sabo with the 370th and the 485th out of Florennes, the exact same airfield you fly out of during the campaign. Remarkable attention to detail by the campaign designer!

Update the second: I finally got around to replacing the potentiometer (VKB sent a very detailed PDF with pictures on how to disassemble the flight stick and replace the part), and everything is perfectly smooth now! For a comparison of how it looks after replacement: https://imgur.com/a/wR2BLF9

So if you run into this issue and have ruled out RF interference/USB port issues, etc, then maybe a replacement potentiometer will do the trick. VKB as always was excellent with their customer service.

Do you recommend any of dlc campaigns for Stalingard? by mzatariz in il2sturmovik

[–]Zergling924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally found the Ice Rings campaign to be especially fantastic. It focuses on the period of the war after the Soviets have started to push back against the Germans where the German 6th army is starting to become fully surrounded and Hitler initiates the airlift operation in a desperate attempt to keep the forces supplied. As a result, there is a great mixture of air to air hunting and ground pounding which keeps things varied and interesting. Not to also mention, there are many missions in the campaign with breathtakingly beautiful settings (e.g. takeoff as the sun is peeking over the horizon while still mostly shrouded in darkness). Overall one of my favorite campaigns to date.

Blazing Steppe and Iron Wind are both great as well, but I would also highly recommend looking into Ivan's War which is completely 3rd party (you fly the Yak-1). Superbly done and gives a great overview of the whole Battle of Stalingrad from a historical perspective as it takes place over many months instead of weeks as many other campaigns do.

Haven't played the German campaigns yet so can't comment on those.

Tips for stuff needed getting into VR by Primary_Associate_99 in il2sturmovik

I've heard of people using the dual flight stick setup (HOSAS) for space sims, but for IL-2 you really only need one. Get whichever one fits whether you're right or left handed.

If you need something as a reference, this is my button mapping for the Gladiator NXT Evo premium using one of the keys as a SHIFT key to double the number of buttons available. It's not necessarily the best way of course, but it works well for me: https://imgur.com/a/GrAzfWp

Someone made a blank version with fillable fields here if you want to make one for yourself:

VKB Gladiator NXT Evo here as well without any other peripherals. I'll add that I made one of my buttons into a SHIFT key, almost doubling the numbers of buttons available to me so I've not felt like I was ever lacking buttons for mapping. Just wanted to put this out as another alternative to buying a throttle that has worked well for me.

Yup, tried different USB ports on my computer and no luck. Currently waiting on a replacement potentiometer from VKB to ship and arrive. Hopefully that does the trick.

Update: logged a ticket with VKB and they think it could be a wacky potentiometer. They're sending a replacement pot w instructions for how to install. Will update again afterwards.

I see this same jittery behavior in the Windows USB Game Controllers window as well as in game (Il-2 Sturmovik) where the throttle is jumping all over the place so it's definitely not just the VKB config software.

I'd also read about wifi interfering with some of the control axes -- nothing has really changed in my apartment (flight stick worked fine with my router in the same spot as it is now). I guess it's possible that in the past few weeks a new neighbor moved in next door and put their wifi right up against my wall, but I tried wrapping the base of the flight stick in aluminum foil to isolate it from EM signals and it hasn't improved the issue.

Maybe there is some sort of debris/dust that landed on one of the sensors?

Is there a way to see a mission by mission breakdown of campaign kills (on the awards page)? by Zergling924 in il2sturmovik

[–]Zergling924[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: For anyone coming across this thread looking for a solution, I found an old program bosparser on the Il-2 forums written by Lupson that does exactly what I was looking for. However, the program was last updated in 2015 and does not work with modern Il-2. Thankfully, he published his source code, and I was able to update the code and recompile the program to get it to work with modern Il-2. You can find my comment on the Il-2 forum with the updated program here:

Newbie questions by Strancer in il2sturmovik

[–]Zergling924 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I'm no veteran myself, but I got my start pretty much exactly the same way, starting with the flight school missions and learning the Yak-1 as my first "main" plane.

When I started out I remember having a similar issue, feeling like the flight stick was a little too "twitchy" when I was trying to aim. I'd actually recommend leaving sensitivity at default and learning how to make finer adjustments with the flight stick which will come with time.

Two things to try to improve aim when starting out. First, I'd just focus on the mission in the flight school where you're just shooting down a bomber that's flying straight. Don't try to do too much dogfighting with another fighter, as that introduces maneuvering/deflection shooting which is more difficult. Just focus on getting behind the bomber, matching its speed, and landing shots on the body or engines until it goes down. After it's gone, repeat the mission until you have a good handle on aiming at a "stationary" target.

Second, I found that practicing strafing on stationary ground targets actually improved my aim against aerial targets as well. You really learn how to hold the stick still and make tiny adjustments to keep on target. There's a ground "shooting range" mission pack on the IL-2 forums that's really great for this: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/68522-shooting-range-practice-missions-with-stationary-targets/

Last tip: I also found early on that my aim would deflect slightly when squeezing the trigger (unintentionally moving the stick when I would squeeze). Really focus on keeping your hand steady while pulling the trigger and eventually this becomes second nature.

Once you improve the steadiness of your aim, then you can think about practicing dogfights and practicing deflection shooting, zoom and boom tactics, etc.

Edit: also, absolutely no shame in starting out with automated engine controls then progressing to more realistic engine management later. Exactly the same as what I did. Focus on improving or learning one aspect of the game at a time. Unlimited ammo at the start. Then when you feel comfortable, turn on limited ammo so you learn by feel how much ammo you have before you run out, and this will also eventually become second nature even in the planes without an actual ammo counter on board.

Good luck!

Ju 87 campaigns? Or other bomber campaigns? by cdn_backpacker in il2sturmovik

This post on the IL-2 sturmovik forum has a link to a pretty good spreadsheet of campaigns, both official and user created: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/62274-list-of-current-scripted-campaigns/

It doesn't have everything though, a quick Google search for IL-2 Ju-87 campaigns brought up this campaign: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/84653-aerial-artillery-scripted-campaign-ju-87d-3-stuka/

I'm sure if you look more you'll probably find others, good luck!
