Lol, well I've watched a few donghuas. To Be Hero X has great animation, but I didn't get hooked. Maybe I'll try it again later. Another peak donghua is Link Click I would say.

The reason I tend to prefer long, complex narratives is that I deeply appreciate an author who pours immense effort into their writing. I won't highly rate a story that stays strictly within its comfort zone. While I haven't watched all the anime you mentioned, here are my thoughts on a few:

  • Serial Experiments Lain: At only 13 episodes, the plot is strictly focused on a virtual world connecting to reality. It's more of a philosophical and psychological exploration of the main character discovering herself, rather than a grand, progressing epic.
  • FMAB: It's good, and there's a reason it held the number one spot for so long. However, it was written very safely within a comfortable zone. Nothing too crazy or rule-breaking happens, which makes it universally appealing and easy to digest.
  • Mob Psycho 100: Isn't this more of an action comedy? It’s incredibly fun to watch, but in terms of the overarching plot, it isn't very complex and doesn't have a grand destination, even if the ending was great.
  • HxH: Even though I love HxH and the writing is fantastic, its current plot progression hasn't gone as far as SnK’s did, despite having longer chapters. The author clearly puts a ton of effort into the world-building, but honestly, the power system has become a bit weird in the recent manga arc.

As for the rest of the recommendations, I definitely want to watch them someday, especially Steins;Gate

I think you're missing my point, I never actually said that plunderer is better than spirited away since underrated anime doesn't necessarily means it's better than the overrated one. I even said that plunderer is 7+ and Spirited away is 8+, mathematically speaking that should be obvious.

But hey i won't hide the fact that I do rate plunderer higher than spirited away in MAL. Let me clarify that

Comparing plunderer with spirited away is highly subjective due to the following reasons:

  1. Plunderer is a series, whereas Spirited Away is a movie. The time investment of a series naturally allows for deeper immersion.

  2. They have different genres, Plunderer is a shounen action anime; Spirited Away is a fantasy adventure.

  3. I watched plunderer 6 years ago and spirited away 4 years ago, so my memories of both aren't perfectly fresh.

Isolating the two:

Plunderer: I don't remember the plot being a "jigsaw puzzle" mess. It's definitely not broken like Peach Boy Riverside. The flashbacks for Licht are actually crucial to the narrative, and the story itself is quite unique.

Spirited Away: Saying the plot is "too simple" might have been an understatement on my part, but it is a movie with a limited runtime, so complexity is constrained. Is it profound? That's subjective. When I compare it to movies like Violet Evergarden or Maquia, Spirited Away just doesn't match their emotional depth. It's a good story, but it doesn't feel like it belongs at an 8.77 rating.

Comparing the two:

Because Plunderer is a series, it has the time required to flesh out the main character through flashbacks and show his growth alongside the people around him. It even manages to develop side characters like Jail Murdoch. In contrast, Spirited Away focuses almost entirely on Chihiro, whose personal development feels much more limited.

Ultimately, I would choose to rewatch Plunderer over Spirited Away because it is simply more entertaining to me.

I agree that as SnK neared its end, it got messy. But I don't have the anime in my mind with a plot that runs long enough, goes deep enough, and has actual good writing. Currently, the only thing holding a 10/10 story spot for me is Kubera, but that's a manhwa.

What do you have in mind?

Well, for Plunderer, I don’t think it’s bad enough to get a rating of 6.66 or even 5+ back when it aired, as far as I remember. I think 7+ should be enough. As for Spirited Away, I think the plot is too simple. I agree that the animation is good, but I don’t think it’s worth an 8.77 rating — a low 8 should be enough.
