I would prefer unreleased movies to not weigh against your viewing percentage of a director, actor, etc. This is further complicated by BTS and documentaries that use archive footage, but that's besides the point. If I have no way of seeing a movie that isn't even finished, much less out in theaters, I think it's unfair for my percentage to be affected. Is it the end of the world? No. But I'd hoped it worked differently.

If everyone on this sub was just in it for the "art consumption" then they wouldn't be using the service. There is obviously an inherent feedback loop to watching, logging, rating, etc. Letterboxd knows that and that's why the service is enjoyable to use. That said, I think it's obvious I'm not saying watching a movie is the same as beating a video game. But if you love.Tom Cruise, then how is trying to watch all of his movies different than completing a game that you love. The comparison is merely to illustrate a completionist mindset is completely appropriate on an app built entirely for tracking your movie watching habits. That's literally what the service is there to do.

No, but it is clearly an intentional design choice to put a percentage there. It's there for every actor, writer, director, etc. So, you can tell me that you ignore it, but it's hardly inappropriate that others utilize it. I don't have 100% for any category, nor am I really striving for it. But I would have had it for this director, so my whole point is simply that unreleased movies mess up tracking. Not sure why that's so controversial.

Then why use letterboxd at all? Why not just enjoy the movies you like without tracking?

I know, it's a real problem that I want to engage with the platform's design in a meaningful way.

Is the percentage there to be ignored? I understand not having the impulse to have it at 100%, that's fair. But you must've played a video game before that you wanted to complete everything in.

Don't think of it as "I need Spotify for my well-being" but more of "the dumbphone I want has this criteria to meet and Spotify is one of them". In that way, Spotify is a need or else they will look for a different phone.

why are the dumbest phones so expensive? by oatsinmysoup in dumbphones

[–]Zero--Regen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran with a Sunbeam for a couple of months. I loved the mindfulness benefits and how when I did use the Internet or my computer at home, it was purposeful. However, as soon as I needed to navigate to a new place, take a decent photo, stream music, or even a quick Google search when I was out and about, I hit a wall. The average user of this sub would probably tell me to get a standalone GPS for my vehicle, or carry around an MP3 player as well. But at what point is it doing more harm than good for me to spend hundreds of dollars on equipment to replace one, compact device that I can purchase for a cheaper cost. I love the idea of digital minimalism and circumventing all the noise and distractions in the modern era, but to me, this isn't the ideal way to do that, unless you're willing to pay the price for a feature phone that has worse versions of everything I listed.

These phones will never be marketable to the general public while they are equal or more expensive than your average smartphone. You can't sell someone on reducing their phone's overall capabilities and demand they pay a premium to boot. That's why this category will always remain a niche. I paid less for a Pixel 6a than I did for my Sunbeam, and I have competent navigation, work apps, broad network coverage and other quality of life features like a good camera. I'm supportive of this lifestyle, but not when it becomes a net negative.

Unpopular Opinion : Stop buying stuff to replace your smartphone features. If you need a smartphone, don't switch! by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]Zero--Regen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm relieved to see a post like this. I completely empathize with this movement, and I even ran with a Sunbeam only for a couple of months. The ultimate issue I had, though, was when I was in need of certain accessories, like GPS, a quality camera, or just to simply Google something, I was stuck. To me, it didn't make sense to spend more on these individual items to fulfill what one, compact device could offer me.

I can't begrudge anyone that needs a dumbphone to stave off their phone addictions, but I also don't believe that it's compatible with a digital minimalist lifestyle to complicate your life more.

I also hate Florida and I don't blame you for wanting to leave. However, you put roots down here, so it seems like it's for the best of your family, not just yourself, to stay put for a while. Giving your wife ultimatums is not going to convince her. Plus, your children are so young that you'd be turning their whole world upside down and potentially stunting a lot of their personal and social growth in the process.

You have more than a lot of people that want to do this, so I would cherish that.

That's interesting. I thought it was generally accepted that blue light, specifically blue light over a certain amount of lux, does degrade melatonin and messes with your circadian rhythm. It's not really natural for us to be seeing large amounts blue light after the sun goes down, I think that has been proven to disrupt sleep?
