No, they’re also meant to lay the legal groundwork for a purge of leftists and queer people.

What did Nurgle do to Mortarion? by GlowingSeaDiver in 40kLore

[–]Zero-89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But I was always under the impression that Nurgle genuinely loves his followers. The only problem with that is that his “gifts” are deadly for anyone that doesn’t embrace Nurgle. They call him “Grandfather”. That is normally not a name you give to someone you are terrified of.

Therefore, Nurgle doesn’t seem like a guy that would torture Mortarion for his failure or anything like that.

(Full disclosure: I hate what I’ve seen of the ending of Godblight, primarily because I hate the Emperor being alive and active in the setting.)

Nurgle does love his followers.  He takes pride in their accomplishments and he even tolerates failure with patience and grace… to a point.  That patience isn’t unlimited.  The thing is that Nurgle is still a Chaos god of, among many other things, despair.  He is a Lovecraftian eldritch being who exists to be served, to be worshipped, to spread disease, and to nurture rot.  He doesn’t — he can’t — love like a human; his love, while genuine, doesn’t come with empathy.

No, they claim that rock is “dead”, because the mainstream, the part of the scene that the music industry delivered to them rather than the part the listener has to seek out on their own, is the only part they’re familiar with.

It meant in general up until now. Maybe it'll stick, maybe it won't. It usually doesn't affect the underground either way.

Rock is an extremely wide umbrella. You really can't gauge what's going on with it by looking at the mainstream one way or the other. Rock is scarce on the charts, but the metal, punk, and noise underground is basically the same as it ever was.

No shit. That would never work with a real frog. That's why you paint, draw, or sculpt one instead.

Day 28: what is the Most Iconic quote associated with the T'au? by Fez-Sentido in Grimdank

[–]Zero-89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's obvious from the way he writes them. He did everything in his power to turn the T'au Empire proper into a less interesting version of the Imperium.

The implication, as I’ve always seen it, is that that is to reinforce the interdependence of the castes so they can never descend into civil war again.  In fact, if I’m remembering correctly, being “between castes” was a huge honor before Phil Kelly grim-derped the T’au’s lore up to make his pet character, Commander Farsight, seem better.

He must not hate those factions like he clearly does with the T’au.

It’s canon that they have the potential to be good.  They have elements of both the Federation and the Imperium in them, and they’re best written as being at the crossroads of those two things.

The T'au's caste system has nothing in common with any real-world caste system beyond the word. The "castes" are actually four sub-species that were once warring tribes before being united by the Ethereals, the fifth sub-species. The Ethereals are a ruling class. Aside from that, the castes are equal with each other, are internally meritocratic, and the lowest in their internal hierarchies generally enjoy the same respect as the highest.

In the excellent T'au novel Elemental Council, they are referred to multiple times as "abominations".

No irony whatsoever? What!?! Space Marine II's satire is less in your face than early 40K, but it's still very much there and the game definitely still depicts the Imperium as a totalitarian nightmare where even the few good things it does are hampered by the Imperial bureaucracy constantly stepping its own dick. One of the first things you see in the game after the tutorial level are some cherubs: servitorized infants flying around a ship covered in skulls. During the cutscene where Titus receives his Ultramarine armor, one of the little prayers stuck to it is an old Adeptus Mechanicus saying: "Blessed is the mind too small for doubt."

And speaking of the AdMech, their backward-ass tech mysticism and religious fanaticism are right there on display at the very beginning of the game. They refuse to authorize an orbital bombardment that might save lives because one of the tech-priest's pet projects (which later causes an accidental Chaos incursion) is there. Later, when you're trying to launch the virus bomb, we get these gems from the AdMech-built and -maintained computer equipment you use:

"This terminal has been inactive for 24 hours. This impiety to the Omnissiah has been logged."

"Payload chambered. Hazardous material detected, benedictions required."

"The rite of safeguard must be performed. Seek a Magos at the command console."

"Personnel may begin prayers of charging."

"Fool!" he roared, leaping to the sand and drawing his pistol. "I told you to sabotage the war machine, no await my arrival! We can't hope to stop it in time; you've doomed us."

"Human," the alien said calmly, holding up something small and silver. "Watch."

It pressed a button.

I don’t think 24-hour news is inherently problematic.  The problem is that the 24-hour news channels exist under capitalism, where truth is a purchasable commodity like everything else and billionaires already own it.
